Ferentz On A Cold Seat After Another Nine-Win Year
This Iowa Hawkeyes 2026 preview starts with the most stable job in the sport. Kirk Ferentz enters 2026 with a 209-128 career record, so the deck rates his hot seat a cool 1 out of 10. First, Iowa finished 9-4 a season ago and went 4-3 in games decided by seven points or less. Then the close losses stacked up, including a 16-13 defeat to Iowa State, a 20-15 loss to Indiana and a 26-21 setback against USC. Because so many of those margins were razor thin, a couple of bounces flip this into an 11-win season. Hank Brown Takes Over An Offense Looking To Climb
Iowa’s offense ranked 119th nationally in total yardage in 2025, though the rushing attack held up at 42nd. Offensive coordinator Tim Lester runs the system, so the continuity carries into a second season together. First, Auburn transfer Hank Brown steps in at quarterback after throwing seven touchdowns and four interceptions a year ago. Then the backfield leans on returning starter Kamari Moulton, with Trevor Lauck and Kade Pieper anchoring the offensive line. Also the group returns just 48 percent of its production, so Brown inherits a young cast around him. Meanwhile the passing game, ranked 129th last fall, has the most room to grow in Lester’s second season.
Phil Parker’s Defense Stays The Standard
Phil Parker is back running the Iowa defense, and the unit was elite a season ago. First, the group finished 9th nationally in total defense and 8th in scoring defense. Then the rushing defense ranked 17th and the pass defense came in 10th, so there is no obvious hole for offenses to attack. Jayden Montgomery leads the linebackers, and Deshaun Lee and Zach Lutmer man the secondary. Because that core returns just 40 percent of its production, Parker reloads again with portal additions and a top-45 recruiting class. From there, the defense remains the reason Iowa hangs in every Big Ten game it plays.
The Schedule, Kinnick And The Win Total
Iowa opens against Northern Illinois before the Cy-Hawk rivalry game with Iowa State in week two. First, Northern Iowa visits in week three ahead of the toughest stretch on the board. Then Michigan, Ohio State and Washington arrive across weeks four through six in a run that could define the season. From there, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Purdue and Illinois lead into the regular-season finale against Nebraska.
