Will Stein Takes Over A 5-7 Kentucky Team
This Kentucky Wildcats 2026 preview opens with a clean slate in Lexington. Will Stein takes over as head coach after the Mark Stoops era ended. The deck rates his hot seat a 1 out of 10 as a brand-new hire. First, Kentucky finished 5-7 in 2025 and missed a bowl. Then the Wildcats went just 2-2 in one-score games, so close losses defined the year. Because Stein starts at 0-0, the pressure sits on the roster he inherits. From there, year one in the SEC becomes a full reset for the program.
Kenny Minchey And An Offense Under Construction
Kentucky’s offense has nowhere to go but up after ranking 105th in total offense and 101st in scoring in 2025. New coordinator Joe Sloan runs the room, and Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey steps in at quarterback. First, Minchey arrives as a redshirt junior from Notre Dame. He went 23 of 29 for 212 yards with two rushing touchdowns in limited action there. Then Sloan surrounds him with returning tight end Willie Rodriguez. Transfers like receiver Nic Anderson and running back CJ Baxter also join the attack. Because the group returns only 40 percent of its production, Stein leaned hard on the portal to rebuild. A top-300 recruit in receiver Kenny Darby also joins the class.
Jay Bateman’s Defense Needs Another Level
Jay Bateman coordinates a Kentucky defense that finished 67th in total defense in 2025. First, the pass defense ranked 105th nationally, the softest number on that side of the ball. Then the run defense held up better at 45th, giving Bateman a base to build on. Because the group returns 52 percent of its production, several starters are back in Lexington. Cornerback Ty Bryant headlines the returners, with Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace up front and Sam Greene at linebacker. Also, the incoming class ranks 38th nationally, so the talent influx continues on defense too. From there, the pass coverage becomes the unit’s swing factor.
The Schedule And The Kentucky Win Total
Kentucky’s 2026 schedule offers no soft landing in the SEC. First, the Wildcats open with Youngstown State before Alabama arrives in week two. Then Texas A&M, South Alabama and a road test at South Carolina follow in a brutal opening stretch. From there, LSU, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt fill the middle of the slate. Next comes a bye, then Tennessee, Florida and Missouri before the Governor’s Cup finale against Louisville. So where does the number land at Kroger Field in Lexington? The deck sets the Kentucky win total at 4.5 wins. From there, the SEC title is plus 15000 and the College Football Playoff is plus 3000. Because Stein is starting over, the hosts weigh that 4.5 against a loaded schedule.
