Eric Morris Inherits A 1-11 Rebuild
This Oklahoma State Cowboys 2026 preview starts with a program hitting the reset button in Stillwater. Eric Morris takes over with a 0-0 record and a coaching hot seat the deck rates a 1 out of 10, the coolest mark on the whole board. First, Oklahoma State finished 1-11 a season ago, the worst record of any team in this preview series. Then the collapse followed Mike Gundy’s exit, with the Cowboys going 0-4 in games decided by eight points or less. Because of that free fall, 2026 reads like year zero for Morris and a fan base ready to turn the page.
Drew Mestemaker Leads A Reloaded Offense
Oklahoma State’s offense bottomed out in 2025, ranking 134th in scoring, 130th in total offense, 114th rushing and 116th passing. Sean Brophy arrives as the new offensive coordinator, so the entire system gets rebuilt from the ground up. First, redshirt sophomore Drew Mestemaker transfers in from North Texas as the reigning NCAA passing yards leader. Then Morris brings 17 commits over from UNT, nine of them on offense, to remake the depth chart around his quarterback. Also back is offensive lineman Jakobe Sanders, part of a group that returns 62 percent of last year’s production. Meanwhile the Cowboys hope Mestemaker’s arm drags a unit that finished near the bottom of the country back toward respectability.
Skyler Cassidy Takes On A Broken Defense
Skyler Cassidy takes over a defense that gave Oklahoma State almost nothing in 2025. First, the unit ranked 116th nationally in total defense a year ago. Then the scoring defense finished 126th and the pass defense sat 121st, the softest numbers on the roster. Because the run defense at least landed 93rd, Cassidy has one spot to build around this offseason. Landon Dean returns up front and LaDainian Fields anchors the secondary, part of a group that brings back 53 percent of its production. So the talent is thin, but the arrow has to point up fast in a loaded Big 12.
The Schedule, Boone Pickens And The Win Total
Oklahoma State opens at home against Tulsa before an early gauntlet with Oregon in Week 2. First, Murray State and West Virginia round out the opening month before the Big 12 slate takes over. Then UCF, Houston, Colorado and Iowa State fill the middle of the year. From there, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Arizona State and Kansas close out the schedule. What does a Saturday feel like at Boone Pickens Stadium when the orange faithful pack Stillwater? The deck sets the Oklahoma State win total at 5.5. So the Cowboys sit plus 3000 to win the Big 12 and plus 2000 for the College Football Playoff. Now the hosts weigh the under against a first-year rebuild.
