David Braun And A Seat That Is Not Warm
This Northwestern Wildcats 2026 preview starts with a coach on solid ground. David Braun carries a 19-19 record in Evanston. So the deck rates his hot seat a 2 out of 10, a cool mark in the Big Ten. First, Northwestern finished 7-6 a season ago. Then the Wildcats went 3-3 in one-score games. Because a few bounces went the other way, a good year nearly became a great one. The deck also grades the program a 6 out of 10 and on the rise.
Aidan Chiles Takes Over Chip Kelly’s Offense
Northwestern’s offense ranked 98th nationally in total offense in 2025. Scoring offense also sat at 98th, with passing offense down at 108th. Chip Kelly now calls the plays as offensive coordinator. So the system gets a full reset in Evanston. First, senior Aidan Chiles transfers in from Michigan State by way of Oregon State. He threw for 1,619 yards and 16 total touchdowns across just eight games last season. Then the skill group returns Caleb Komolafe at running back. Hayden Eligon II and Griffin Wilde also return at receiver. Meanwhile the offense brings back 57 percent of its production. So Chiles inherits a familiar cast in year one under Kelly.
Tim McGarigle’s Defense Is The Backbone
Tim McGarigle runs a Northwestern defense that carried the team in 2025. First, the unit ranked 31st nationally in total defense a season ago. Then the scoring defense finished 23rd, the strongest number on the roster. The pass defense also sat 30th, with the run defense at 48th. Brendan Flakes returns up front, and Braydon Brus anchors the linebackers. Robert Fitzgerald, Josh Fussell and Braden Turner also headline the secondary. Because that group brings back 58 percent of its production, McGarigle has plenty to work with.
The Lakefront Slate And The Win Total
Northwestern opens at home against South Dakota State. Then Colorado and Deion Sanders visit in Week 3. First, Indiana and Penn State follow in a brutal early stretch. Next come Ball State and a road trip to Michigan State. From there, a home date with Rutgers sets up the back half. The Wildcats then travel to Oregon before Iowa, Ohio State, Minnesota and Illinois. What does a Saturday feel like on the lakefront while Ryan Field gets rebuilt? The deck sets the Northwestern win total at 5.5 wins.
