Venables On The Hot Seat In His First SEC Year
This Oklahoma Sooners 2026 preview starts with a coach who quieted the noise. Brent Venables carries a 32-20 record in Norman, and the deck still rates his seat a 7 out of 10. First, Oklahoma finished 10-3 a season ago in its debut SEC campaign. Then the Sooners went 4-1 in games decided by eight points or less, so the margins fell their way. Because Venables steadied the program after a rocky stretch, 2026 reads like a prove-it season with the pressure back on.
John Mateer And An Offense Looking To Climb
Oklahoma’s offense ranked 92nd in total offense in 2025. The scoring unit sat 79th, the passing game 60th and the run game down at 113th. Ben Arbuckle arrives as the new offensive coordinator to fix that side of the ball. First, quarterback John Mateer returns after transferring in from Washington State. Then his 2025 line read 14 passing touchdowns and 8 on the ground. That was down from 29 and 15 the year before at Washington State. Also back are running back Tory Blaylock and receiver Isaiah Sategna III to give Mateer some help. Meanwhile the offense returns 75 percent of its production. So Arbuckle inherits a veteran group that has to score more in the SEC.
Todd Bates And A Defense That Anchors The Team
Todd Bates runs an Oklahoma defense that was the backbone of the roster in 2025. First, the unit ranked 6th nationally in total defense a year ago. Then the rushing defense finished 3rd and the scoring defense landed 7th, elite marks across the board. Also the pass defense sat a respectable 32nd to round out the profile. Because that group carried the Sooners through their one-score wins, Bates wants to hold the standard even after some roster turnover. So the defense stays the identity of this team heading into 2026.
The Schedule, Norman And The Win Total
Oklahoma opens at home against UTEP before a Week 2 showdown with Michigan. First, New Mexico wraps the non-conference before Georgia brings the first heavyweight SEC test. Then the Red River rivalry against Texas headlines a stretch that also runs through Kentucky and Mississippi State. From there, South Carolina, Florida and Ole Miss keep the pressure on.
