New Mexico Lobos 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the New Mexico Lobos 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 New Mexico Lobos roster and what to expect in the Mountain West this season. Can Jason Eck build on a 9-4 debut and a 4-2 mark in one-score games while sitting on a cool 1-out-of-10 hot seat in Albuquerque? And is Idaho transfer Jack Layne the answer at quarterback after throwing for 2,486 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago?
Can an offense that ranked 73rd in scoring and 90th in total offense climb under coordinator Luke Schleusner with 68 percent of its production back? Does Spence Nowitsky’s defense hold up after finishing 41st in total defense and 21st against the run last season? Do Jack Layne, tight end Cade Keith and a returning offensive line take a step forward this fall? How does the rebuilt Mountain West break for the Lobos? Which games decide the season on a slate that runs from Central Michigan through Oklahoma, the New Mexico State and UTEP rivalries and a UNLV, Wyoming and Air Force finish? What does a Saturday feel like at University Stadium in Albuquerque? And where’s the betting value on the New Mexico Lobos win total, Mountain West odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Jason Eck And A Program On The Rise
This New Mexico Lobos 2026 preview starts with a coach who has the program climbing. Jason Eck went 9-4 in his debut season in Albuquerque. So the deck rates his seat a cool 1 out of 10, one of the safest marks in the Mountain West. First, the Lobos went 4-2 in games decided by seven points or less. Then that knack for close finishes turned a rebuild into a bowl season. Because of that jump, the deck grades the state of the program a 7 out of 10 and rising.

Jack Layne And An Offense Looking To Climb
New Mexico’s offense ranked 73rd nationally in scoring in 2025, with total offense sitting 90th. Luke Schleusner runs the unit as coordinator, and the group returns 68 percent of its production. First, Idaho transfer Jack Layne takes over at quarterback after throwing for 2,486 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Then tight end Cade Keith and receivers Shawn Miller and Zhaiel Smith give Layne familiar targets. Meanwhile the offensive line brings back Malik Aliane, Tyler Lawrence and Jaymar Tasi up front. Because so much production returns, the Lobos expect a steadier attack this fall.
Spence Nowitsky’s Defense Holds The Line
Spence Nowitsky runs the New Mexico defense, and his group had a solid 2025. First, the unit ranked 41st nationally in total defense a year ago. Then the rushing defense finished 21st, the strongest number on the roster. Meanwhile the passing defense lagged at 88th, the spot most in need of a fix. Brian Booker anchors the line, Jaxton Eck and Mercury Swaim lead the linebackers, and Tavian Combs and CJ McBean patrol the secondary. Because that group returns 58 percent of its production, Nowitsky has real pieces to build around.

The Schedule And The Win Total
New Mexico opens at home against Central Michigan before the early tests arrive. First, the Lobos travel to Oklahoma in Week 3 for the biggest payday on the slate. Then the rivalry stretch lands with New Mexico State and UTEP back to back. From there, a road trip to Hawaii and a date with North Dakota State lead into the Mountain West grind. The slate closes with UNLV, Wyoming and Air Force, three games that could decide the season. So what does a Saturday feel like at University Stadium once the Albuquerque crowd shows up? The deck sets the New Mexico win total at 7.5, with the Lobos at plus 220 to win the Mountain West and plus 1300 to reach the College Football Playoff.
