Dell McGee On The Hot Seat In Year Three
This Georgia State Panthers 2026 preview opens with a coach out of time. Dell McGee carries a 4-20 record in Atlanta, so the deck rates his hot seat a 9 out of 10, one of the hottest marks in the Sun Belt. First, Georgia State finished 1-11 last season, the worst mark in the conference. Then the Panthers went 0-2 in games decided by eight points or less, including a 14-7 loss to James Madison and a 38-31 defeat to South Alabama. Because of that collapse, 2026 reads like a make-or-break year for McGee.
Cameran Brown And Hue Jackson’s Offense
Georgia State’s offense ranked 77th nationally in total offense last season, with scoring offense down at 119th. Hue Jackson runs the group as offensive coordinator, so the Panthers hope his track record travels. First, transfer quarterback Cameran Brown takes over after throwing 17 touchdowns with just one interception in 2025. Then Brown arrives by way of Tennessee Tech and West Georgia, a well-traveled veteran with a clean decision-making profile. Also back up front are offensive linemen Deandre Duffus, Donovan Funsch and Tyhler Williams. Meanwhile the offense returns just 48 percent of its production, so Brown inherits a young supporting cast around him.
Cam Clark, Jon Haneline And A Defense In Need Of Repair
The Georgia State defense finished 133rd in total defense a season ago, so the new staff inherits real work. First, the scoring defense ranked 134th, near the very bottom of the country. Then the rushing defense checked in at 130th, the softest number on the roster. Cam Clark and Jon Haneline step in as co-defensive coordinators to lead that rebuild. Also back are lineman Jabriel Rhodes-Nelson and defensive back Deuce Walker, two of the few returning starters. Because the unit returns just 27 percent of its production, Clark and Haneline lean heavily on the transfer portal.
The Schedule And The Georgia State Win Total
Georgia State opens at home against North Carolina A&T before an in-state trip to Kennesaw State. First, UCF and Northern Illinois follow in a tough non-conference stretch. Then Old Dominion, James Madison and Arkansas State kick off the Sun Belt slate. From there, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana and Marshall close out the year.
