This Virginia Cavaliers 2026 preview starts with a coach who finally broke through. Tony Elliott went 11-3 in 2025 after entering the year with a 22-26 record in Charlottesville. So the deck still rates his seat a 5 out of 10. That is a warm mark for a coach coming off a breakout. First, Virginia went 5-2 in games decided by ten points or less. Then signature wins over Florida State and Louisville powered the turnaround. Because that close-game luck can swing hard, 2026 becomes a test of whether the breakthrough was real.
Beau Pribula And An Offense With Playmakers
Virginia’s offense ranked 29th nationally in total offense in 2025, with the scoring offense sitting 39th under coordinator Dez Kitchings. First, Missouri transfer Beau Pribula takes over at quarterback after arriving by way of Penn State. Then the line returns McKale Boley, Noah Josey and Drake Metcalf to protect him. Also Tennessee running back Peyton Lewis joins an incoming class built to add speed. Because the group returns 55 percent of its production, Pribula inherits a roster with real pieces around him.
John Rudzinski’s Defense Holds The Line
John Rudzinski runs a Virginia defense that ranked 20th nationally in total defense a season ago. First, the scoring defense finished 22nd, and the rushing defense also landed 22nd. Then linebacker Kam Robinson returns as the headliner of the front seven. Also Fisher Camac, Jason Hammond, Ethan Minter and Donavon Platt come back across the front and secondary. Because that group returns 62 percent of its production, Rudzinski has real experience back. He has the pieces to keep this unit steady in the ACC.
The Schedule, The Field Storms And The Win Total
Virginia opens Week 0 against NC State. A home date with Norfolk State and a neutral-site clash with West Virginia come next. First, Delaware and Florida State close out the early slate.
