College Football Pick Of The Day (September 20th): NCAA Week 4 Total Pick
Iowa @ Michigan Under 38.5 Points
For today’s college football pick of the day, I’m looking ahead to the Iowa-Michigan game. This one looks to be a defensive battle, and the total is currently sitting at 38.5. It may sound crazy, but I think it could go lower as we near Saturday’s kickoff. Iowa is 3-0 and allowing just 4.3 points per game, which is the best in the country.
For a long time, the Hawkeyes have been known for their defense. They’ve given up 13 points this season and posted two shutouts. Sure, it was against lower competition. However, Michigan’s offense is 118th in total yards at 323.3 per game and averaging 27.3 points. Again, against lower competition.
Michigan’s defense is no slouch either. They’ve allowed 220 yards and 13 points per game. Iowa’s offense looks better on paper at 37 points per game, but that production mainly came against Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois. Meanwhile, Michigan has played UTEP, Oklahoma, and Western Michigan, and has only allowed a total of 39 points.
If you look at the games that were against bigger-school competition, Iowa beat Iowa State 16-13, and Michigan beat Oklahoma 17-10. Michigan’s stadium is loud, but Iowa doesn’t change who they are on the road. These two teams have faced off four times since 2019, and twice the total go above 38.5. Michigan won 42-3 in the one with the most points. They aren’t that offense anymore. The other games finished 26-0, 27-14, and 3-10. 17-10 or 21-16 feels like a plausible score. I’m taking the under.
