This Jacksonville State Gamecocks 2026 preview starts with a coach sitting pretty. Charles Kelly went 9-5 in his debut, so the deck rates his seat a cool 1 out of 10, one of the safest marks on the board. First, Jacksonville State won nine games and stayed in the Conference USA title hunt a year ago. Then the Gamecocks went 7-4 in games decided by 10 points or less, so they lived on the margins. Because those close finishes can swing hard, 2026 becomes a test of whether Kelly can turn coin-flips into wins again.
Caden Creel And An Offense Built To Run
Jacksonville State’s offense ranked 41st nationally in total yards last season, and the rushing attack finished 5th in the country. First, new coordinator Taylor Housewright takes over the play-calling, so the run-heavy identity carries into year two. Then Salute to Veterans Bowl MVP Caden Creel returns at quarterback after closing 2025 on a high. Returning starter Deondre Johnson also anchors the receiver room. Adrian Gumm and Lucas Mrachkovskiy come back up front to protect Creel. Meanwhile the group returns 60 percent of its production, so Housewright inherits a veteran core.
Brian Williams And A Defense That Must Tighten Up
Brian Williams runs the Jacksonville State defense after the unit finished 74th nationally in total defense a season ago. First, the scoring defense sat at 71st, so points came in bunches at times. Then the pass defense checked in at 96th, the softest number on that side of the ball. Jawaun Campbell returns up front while Walker O’Steen and Mac Sanders anchor the linebackers. Tre’Quon Fegans and Caleb Nix also come back in the secondary. Because that group returns 54 percent of its production, Williams has pieces to build on in Conference USA.
The Schedule, The Rivalries And The Win Total
Jacksonville State opens at North Dakota State in Week Zero before Eastern Kentucky visits to start the home slate. First, Ohio and Georgia Southern follow in the early nonconference stretch. Then Middle Tennessee, Kennesaw State and FIU kick off the Conference USA schedule. From there, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, Western Kentucky, Missouri State and Delaware round out the year.
