Mike Uremovich And The State Of Ball State
This Ball State 2026 preview starts with Mike Uremovich and a 4-8 debut season. So the deck hands him a hot-seat rating of just 1 out of 10, which is about as safe as a coach can get. Uremovich took over a program that had bottomed out and kept most of his losses close. First, Ball State went 3-1 in games decided by eight points or less, winning the tight ones over New Hampshire, Ohio and Kent State. The deck also grades the program a 3 out of 10 on the rise. Because of that, the hosts frame this as a floor-raising year and not a bowl push. The seat is cold, but the roster still has a long climb ahead.
The Offense And The Keldric Luster Question
Mike Uremovich has his fingerprints all over an offense that has nowhere to go but up. First, Ball State ranked 134th in total offense and 132nd in scoring offense in 2025. The quarterback job runs through Texas State transfer Keldric Luster, who landed in Muncie by way of SMU. Then the deck flags the catch, because Luster has more career carries than pass attempts at 16 to 12. So this is a run-first, unproven passer being asked to lift a bottom-ten offense. Meanwhile, the portal added receiver Jabari Smith Jr. from FAU to give Luster a real downfield target. Donovan Hamilton also headlines the returning skill group.
Returning Production And The Portal Haul
The offense brings back 47 percent of its production, so there is a base to build on up front. Ball State returns tight end Tato Hoover along with offensive linemen Tristan Cook, Chris Hood and Cole Mosier. First, that veteran line gives Luster a chance to survive the early schedule. The class itself is heavy on volume, with 48 total additions split between 22 recruits and 26 transfers. Then the deck names center Maxwell Wentz from Dartmouth as an interior fix. Because none of it carries a top-300 recruit, this is a portal-built roster leaning on experience over upside.
Jeff Knowles And A Defense Under Construction
Jeff Knowles runs a defense that returns just 24 percent of its production, so this is a full teardown. First, Ball State finished 104th in total defense and 107th against the run in 2025. The only real anchors back are defensive backs Derek Fields and Willizhuan Yates. So Knowles leaned on the portal to rebuild the front and the back end at once. Then the deck highlights edge Jared Badie, linebacker Cincear Lewis from Cincinnati and cornerback Diante Griffin from Ohio State among the additions. Because the class ranks 113th overall with no top-300 names, the margin for error stays thin. This side has to grow up fast for any of the win-total math to work.
The Schedule And The Betting Value
The schedule opens about as hard as it can, so buckle up. First, Ball State travels to Ohio State in week one before the MAC portion arrives. Then the winnable stretch shows up with Kent State, Toledo, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Ohio and Central Michigan on the slate. Non-conference dates with Stony Brook, Liberty, Northwestern and Sacramento State round out the schedule. The deck sets the win total at 3.5, with Ball State +9400 to win the MAC and +25000 to reach the College Football Playoff. So the number sits low for a reason after a 4-8 year and a defense starting over. Because the offense is unproven and the opener is a buzzsaw, the hosts weigh whether even four wins is the right line. The betting value comes down to how fast this portal roster gels.
