Sonny Cumbie’s Breakthrough And The Jump To The Sun Belt
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 2026 preview opens on Sonny Cumbie and the best year of his tenure. First, Cumbie guided the Bulldogs to an 8-5 finish in 2025. Then Louisiana Tech capped the season with an Independence Bowl win over Coastal Carolina. That result earns real credit, so the guys walk through how he did it. Meanwhile, the deck still flashes a 7 out of 10 hot-seat number on Cumbie. Because his overall Tech record reads 19-31, the guys weigh whether one strong fall truly shifts the picture in Ruston.
The timing of the breakthrough makes it more interesting. This offseason Louisiana Tech jumped from Conference USA up to the Sun Belt. First, the guys ask whether an 8-5 mark holds up against tougher weekly competition. Then they point to the close-game math, where Tech went 3-2 in games decided by ten points or less. The Offense And The Quarterback Room
The offense returns as the strength of this roster. Last season Louisiana Tech ranked 7th nationally in rushing offense and 14th in total offense. First, new coordinator Nathan Young inherits that production after a promotion from within the staff. Then the guys dig into whether the scoring, which sat 29th, can climb even higher. Because the secondary was the soft spot, opposing quarterbacks found room all fall. From there the crew asks how much the unit has to improve before Tech can trust it in tight games.
The move up a level raises the bar again. This defense returns 48 percent of its production, so plenty of new faces have to gel fast. The 2026 Schedule And Win Total
The 2026 slate looks brutal on paper. First, Louisiana Tech opens with the in-state rivalry against Northwestern State. Then the money games arrive back to back, with road trips to LSU and Baylor. From there Army visits Ruston before the Sun Belt grind takes over. Next come the rivalry road dates at Louisiana and ULM, plus home games with Old Dominion and Southern Miss.
