Four And Eight, And The Napier Era Is Over
Florida finished 4-8 in 2025, a record that ended Billy Napier’s run in Gainesville. The Gators went 2-4 in games decided by ten points or fewer. That margin turns a rough season into a coaching change. First, the offense could never find consistency at quarterback. Then the losses stacked up late in the year. The administration moved on before the calendar turned. Because the roster still returns real talent on both sides of the ball, this reads as a fresh start. It is not a full rebuild. Jon Sumrall arrives from Tulane to try to fix it in year one.
Jon Sumrall And A One-Out-Of-Ten Hot Seat
Jon Sumrall takes over at Florida with a 1-out-of-10 hot-seat rating on the pod. That is about as cool as a first-year coach can get. He arrives after building Tulane into a program that won consistently in the American. The Gators are betting that track record translates to the SEC. First, he inherits a locker room still adjusting to a coaching change. Then he has to win over a fan base that expects more than four wins a year. Because year one carries almost no real pressure by hot-seat math, Sumrall gets a long runway. Few first-time SEC coaches ever see that kind of patience.
The Quarterback Battle Buster Faulkner Has To Settle
Florida ranked 104th in total offense in 2025. The passing game finished 93rd, and the rushing attack checked in at 91st. New offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner inherits that mess. His first job is settling the quarterback room. First, Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo enters fall camp as the favorite. Then Tramiel Jones pushes him in an open competition. DJ Lagway is now gone after transferring to Baylor. Because the offense returns just 55 percent of its production, Faulkner also leans on other pieces. Running back Jadan Baugh and receivers Vernell Brown III and Eric Singleton Jr. carry the early load while the passing game sorts itself out.
Brad White’s Defense Returns Most Of Its Pieces
Florida’s defense finished 2025 ranked 70th in total defense and 60th in scoring defense. It ranked 77th against both the run and the pass. Coordinator Brad White returns for year two. This time he keeps 77 percent of his production intact. First, DL Jamari Lyons and LB Myles Graham anchor the front seven. Then DB Cormani McClain and Bryce Thornton return in a secondary with real experience. Because so much continuity carries over from a defense that already graded out better than the offense, White’s group looks like the safer bet. It should take a real step forward in 2026.
The Schedule Sends Florida To Atlanta, Not Jacksonville
Florida opens with FAU and Campbell before Auburn arrives for the first real test in week three. Then Ole Miss, Missouri and South Carolina fill out a brutal middle stretch. The biggest change on the slate is Georgia. The rivalry game moves to Atlanta in 2026 instead of the usual neutral site in Jacksonville. That shift had the hosts fuming on the show. First, Texas visits The Swamp. Then Oklahoma, Kentucky and Vanderbilt round out the back half. Florida State closes the regular season. Because the SEC gauntlet never really lets up, this schedule tells you almost everything about where the win total should land.
The Bet: Win Total 7.5
The number is 7.5 wins. Florida is priced at +2500 to win the SEC and +400 to make the College Football Playoff. On the show, both hosts weighed a first-year coach and an unsettled quarterback room. The schedule also offers little room for error. Because so much rides on how fast Aaron Philo or Tramiel Jones takes control of the offense, neither host wanted to lean too hard either way. First, the defense returning 77 percent of its production is the argument for the over. Then a brutal SEC slate and a coaching transition make the under just as easy to talk yourself into. Getting to eight wins is realistic if the quarterback battle resolves cleanly by August.
