NC State Wolfpack 2026 Preview

Dave Doeren And The NC State Hot Seat
The NC State Wolfpack 2026 preview opens on the coach everyone keeps talking about. First, Dave Doeren is back for another run in Raleigh with a 95-70 career record. Then the guys weigh a hot-seat number that the deck pegs at a 5 out of 10. That reading sits right in the middle, so the arrow could point either way this fall. Because the Wolfpack went 8-5 last year and beat Memphis in the Gasparilla Bowl, the floor already looks solid. From there the crew asks whether solid is finally good enough in Raleigh.
The bigger question is whether this program ever breaks through. To begin, NC State has not won the league since 1979, and that drought hangs over everything. Also, Doeren has watched Indiana, Vanderbilt and Duke jump the line nationally. So the fan base wants more than another seven-win season. Meanwhile the deck has him 4-0 against Virginia and 9-4 against North Carolina. Then it flips hard at the top of the sport, where he sits 2-9 versus Clemson. Because of that split, the guys call this the most inconsistent team they can find.
Kurt Roper’s Offense And CJ Bailey
The offense has real reason for optimism in 2026. Last season NC State finished 66th in total offense and 45th in scoring, so the group sat in the middle of the pack. First, coordinator Kurt Roper gets another year to shape this attack. Then the guys dig into a run game that ranked just 81st and needs more push. Because the passing game landed 49th, the arm talent is already there. From there they map how Roper squeezes more out of a unit that returns 62 percent of its production. Next they weigh the pieces lost in the portal against the pieces coming back.
At quarterback the guys love what returns. CJ Bailey is back for his junior year after a huge 2025. He threw for 3,105 yards with 25 touchdowns against just 9 interceptions and posted a 79.4 QBR. That production gives Roper a real starting point, so the room does not rebuild from scratch. Also, Bailey turned down the portal to stay in Raleigh, which matters for continuity. Next the guys weigh whether he takes another step in year two. Then they break down the receivers and linemen who have to replace lost snaps. Because the quarterback is set, this offense could climb fast.
D.J. Eliot’s Defensive Rebuild
The defense carries the bigger question mark on this roster. NC State finished 111th in total defense and 132nd against the pass in 2025, so the floor sits low. First, coordinator D.J. Eliot has to fix a secondary that gave up chunk plays all fall. Then the guys get into how heavy the rebuild really is. Because this group returns just 46 percent of its production, plenty of new faces have to gel fast. Meanwhile the ACC throws explosive passing offenses at you week after week. From there the crew weighs whether this side of the ball improves enough to matter.
The portal is where NC State tried to patch the holes. First, the deck lists an incoming class ranked 48th overall with zero top-300 recruits. Then the guys weigh transfer adds like corner Ondre Evans from Georgia and safety King Mack. Also, edge rusher Harvey Dyson and linebacker Da’Kaari Nelson land on that defensive board. Because the rushing defense already sat a respectable 52nd, the front seven is the stronger half. Meanwhile the back end has to prove it can cover in league play. So the guys stress that this unit has to show growth before the Wolfpack steals extra wins.
The 2026 ACC Schedule And Win Total
The 2026 slate is the softest one the guys can find in the Power Four. First, NC State opens Week 0 against Virginia before a home date with Richmond. Then Vanderbilt and Appalachian State fill out the non-conference draw. From there the ACC grind starts with Louisville and Wake Forest in back-to-back weeks. Next come the two the guys call locks, a road trip to Stanford and a home game against Cal. Also on the board are Duke, Syracuse and a Week 12 trip to Florida State. Because the schedule swings so much, the guys map a clear path to a bowl.
Then they close it out where the betting value lives. The NC State win total sits at 7.5 games, so the guys dig into that number hard. First they weigh an 8-5 team against a schedule this friendly. Then they get into the ACC odds at +2200 and the +1400 College Football Playoff price. Because the road ends at North Carolina in Week 13, that rivalry could decide the whole season. Also, Doeren has framed this year as championship or bust, which raises the stakes. From there the guys hand you the read they trust on the Wolfpack heading into the fall.
