Joe Moorhead And The Akron Rebuild In Year Five
The Akron Zips 2026 preview opens on Joe Moorhead and a program still digging out. First, Moorhead sits at 13-35 across his Akron tenure, so the record card reads rough. Then last fall handed the fan base something real, a 5-7 finish after back-to-back years stuck near the bottom. Because that jump matters, the guys walk through how he got there. Meanwhile the hot-seat meter still reads 6 out of 10 on Moorhead. Next they weigh whether year five pushes the Zips toward a bowl or back into the MAC cellar.
The 2025 record tells the rest of the story. Akron went 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC, so the league slate stayed even. First the guys break down which wins were real and which were close calls. Then they get into how thin the margin was for a team this young. Because the schedule swung hard, a couple of bounces decided the bowl math. The Offense And Reese Poffenbarger
The offense has plenty of ground to make up in 2026. Last season Akron ranked 94th in total offense and 108th in scoring, so the numbers were rough. Then the guys weigh those anchors against a defensive class that ranked 132nd nationally. Because the portal haul brought zero top-300 names, the talent bar stayed modest. Meanwhile the MAC throws quick, spread passing offenses at you week after week. From there the guys stress that this group has to gel fast or the close games slip away. The 2026 MAC Schedule And Win Total
The 2026 slate has some teeth early. First, Akron opens on the road at Wake Forest before a home date with Robert Morris. Then comes a trip to Minnesota and a payday in the Big Ten. From there the non-conference runs through UNLV before the MAC grind takes over. Next the guys hit Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and a Week 7 date with Miami. Also the Kent State rivalry and the battle for the Wagon Wheel land in Week 8. Finally the closing stretch runs through Ohio, Western Michigan, Buffalo and UMass.
Then they close it out where the betting value lives. The Akron win total sits at 4.5 games, so the guys dig into that number hard.
