Jay Sawvel Faces The Heat In The Wyoming Cowboys 2026 Preview
The Wyoming Cowboys 2026 preview opens on a head coach who badly needs results. First, Jay Sawvel sits at 7-17 through his first two seasons in Laramie. Then the deck slaps an 8 out of 10 hot seat rating on him. That warning tells you the seat is warm, so the guys dig into it. Meanwhile the athletic director has publicly asked for dramatic improvement in 2026. Because of that, year three carries real weight for Sawvel and his staff. The record last fall did Sawvel no favors either. Wyoming finished 4-8 in 2025 after a 3-9 debut season, so the arrow points down. First the guys break down how a proud program slipped this far. The Offense, Christian Taylor And Tyler Hughes
The offense is where this whole rebuild has to start. Wyoming ranked 131st in scoring offense and 122nd in total offense last fall, so the floor was low. First, new coordinator Christian Taylor takes over a unit with nowhere to go but up. Then the guys weigh what his William and Mary and Buffalo Bills background brings to Laramie. Because the passing game sat 113th and the run game sat 99th, both sides need work. Also the staff added 41 offensive commits, though zero landed above a .85 transfer grade. From there the crew asks whether Taylor can drag this offense back toward respectable.
At quarterback the guys like the fit more than the resume. Tyler Hughes arrives as a senior transfer from William and Mary, where Taylor recruited him. That existing relationship gives the new offense a head start, so the install should move fast. First the guys break down Hughes as a dual-threat who can push the tempo. Also the Cowboys host Hawaii, Air Force, New Mexico and UConn in Laramie. Because Boise State and Fresno State fall off the slate, the path eased up. Next the guys hit the non-conference tests that could swing the win total.
