Tosh Lupoi Takes Over The California Golden Bears 2026 Preview
The California Golden Bears 2026 preview opens on the new man in charge. First, Tosh Lupoi comes home to Berkeley as a Cal alum and a former Oregon defensive coordinator. Then he inherits a team that went 7-6 a year ago. Because he is a first-year head coach, the hot-seat card reads a cool 1 out of 10 for now. From there the guys weigh how much of that 2025 roster carries over. They also flag the Cal alum tie of general manager Ron Rivera, who now helps steer the program.
The 2025 tape gives Lupoi a real starting point. To begin, Cal finished 7-6 overall and 4-4 in ACC play in its second year in the league. Michael Hutchings And The Cal Defensive Rebuild
The defense carries a steadier profile than the offense. Cal finished 62nd in total defense and 83rd in scoring defense in 2025, so the middle of the pack is the baseline. First, coordinator Michael Hutchings has to push that unit up the rankings. Then the guys get into a pass defense that graded 45th, which is the strength here. Because the run defense sat 79th, that is where the work shows up. From there the crew weighs whether this side of the ball can carry close games. They also flag the portal churn that Hutchings has to blend in quickly.
The talent question is really about depth this fall. First the guys break down the returning starters against all the new faces.
