The Memphis Tigers 2026 Preview Opens With Charles Huff
The Memphis Tigers 2026 preview opens on a coaching change at the top. First, Charles Huff arrives from Marshall to replace Ryan Silverfield. Then he inherits a program coming off an 8-5 season in 2025. That kind of baseline is rare for a first-year hire, so the guys dig into the fit. Because Huff walks into a winner, the hot-seat card reads a cool 1 out of 10. Meanwhile the crew grades the hire and asks whether the Tigers keep climbing under a new head coach.
The state of the program points up heading into 2026. First, the guys put Memphis at an 8 out of 10 on the rise. From there they walk through a close-game meter that shaped last fall. Memphis went 2-3 in games decided by seven points or less in 2025, so the margins were razor thin. Next the crew weighs whether Huff can flip a few of those coin-flip finishes. They also flag the spots where a brand-new staff has to prove it can close games late.
Kevin Decker’s Offense And The Quarterback Battle
The offense sets up as a real strength in 2026. Last season Memphis ranked 25th in scoring and 35th in total offense, so the bar is already high. First, new coordinator Kevin Decker takes over that unit after arriving from Old Dominion. Then he has to keep a passing game that sat 65th and a run game that ranked 31st on schedule. Because only 44 percent of the offensive production returns, Decker leans hard on a heavy portal class. From there the guys map how he keeps this group among the better offenses in the league.
At quarterback the guys walk through a wide-open battle. First, West Florida transfer Marcus Stokes brings a resume of 40 touchdowns and 3,600 yards from the Division II level. Then Air Noland enters the mix as a redshirt sophomore transfer from South Carolina by way of Ohio State. Because neither passer has locked down the job, the crew keeps the depth chart open. Meanwhile they weigh the Stokes production against Noland’s pedigree as a former top-four quarterback recruit. Next the guys ask which arm gives Decker the higher ceiling this fall.
Lance Guidry’s Defensive Rebuild
The defense carries the bigger question mark on this roster. Memphis finished 52nd in scoring defense and 59th in total defense in 2025, so the floor is workable. First, new coordinator Lance Guidry has to rebuild a unit with no returning starters at all. Then he sorts out a secondary that ranked 85th against the pass a year ago. Because the run defense sat 41st, that front is the steadier piece to build around. From there the guys weigh how fast a group of new faces can gel in a pass-happy league.
The portal math tells the rest of the story. Memphis brought in 75 total commits, split between 22 recruits and 53 transfers, so the churn is enormous. First the guys break down what a 72nd overall class means for the two-deep. Then they weigh 39 percent returning production against all of that turnover. Meanwhile the AAC throws explosive passing offenses at you week after week. Because a green defense drops close games, the crew stresses that this side has to gel fast for Memphis to hit its number.
The 2026 AAC Schedule And Win Total
The 2026 slate has some real swing to it. Memphis opens Week 0 against UNLV in Las Vegas before hosting Arkansas State, so the guys start there. Then comes the money game, a Week 2 road trip to Boise State. From there the AAC grind takes over with Tulane and the Battle for the Bones, Navy, South Florida and Temple. Next the guys hit the crossover dates against Charlotte, UAB and East Carolina. They also flag the Army game as a physical spot that can wear a tired team down late in the year.
Then they close it out where the betting value lives. The Memphis win total sits at 7.5 games, so the guys dig into that number hard. First they weigh an 8-5 team against a new staff and a fresh quarterback room. Then they get into the AAC odds at +650 and the +1000 College Football Playoff long shot. Because the roster turned over so heavily, both hosts land on the under 7.5. Finally they hand you the read they trust on the Memphis Tigers heading into the fall.
