Mark Carney Keeps The Kent State Rebuild Rolling
The Kent State Golden Flashes 2026 preview opens on the man who saved the program. First, Mark Carney took over a roster that won zero games in 2024. Then he guided the Golden Flashes to a 5-7 finish in 2025. That kind of jump earns real credit, so the guys walk through how he did it. Meanwhile, the hot-seat card still reads a cool 1 out of 10 for Carney. The guys break down why the arrow points up in Kent.
The story only gets better when you look at where this program was. To begin, Kent State went winless just two seasons ago, so any bowl talk felt absurd. From there, Carney kept the Golden Flashes competitive in game after game last fall. Because of that, the interim tag came off and the job became his. Now the guys weigh whether year two of the Carney era pushes toward a bowl. They also flag the exact games that will tell you if this jump is real.
The Offense And Dru DeShields
The offense has plenty of room to climb in 2026. Last season Kent State ranked 128th in total offense and 115th in scoring, so the numbers were rough. First, coordinator Clay Patterson has to turn those rankings around with mostly familiar faces. Then the guys dig into where the points actually come from this fall. Because the passing game sat 100th and the run game sat 131st, both sides need real work. From there they map how Patterson gets more juice out of this group.
At quarterback the guys like what returns. Dru DeShields is back for his redshirt junior year after a strong 2025. He threw for 2,030 yards with 18 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions last fall. That production gives Patterson a real starting point, so the room does not start from scratch. Next the guys weigh whether DeShields can take another step in year two. Cherokee Valeria’s Defensive Rebuild
The defense carries the bigger question mark on this roster. Kent State finished 128th in scoring defense and 125th in total defense in 2025, so the floor sits low. First, coordinator Cherokee Valeria has to fix a unit that struggled against the run and the pass. Then the guys get into how heavy the rebuild really is up and down the depth chart. Because the Golden Flashes leaned hard on the transfer portal, plenty of new faces have to gel fast. From there the crew weighs whether this side of the ball improves enough to matter.
The portal math does not make it simple either. Kent State signed 35 additions but landed zero transfers above a .85 grade, so the talent bar stayed modest.
