Riley On The Hot Seat In Los Angeles
This USC Trojans 2026 preview opens with a coach feeling the heat. Lincoln Riley enters the year 35-18 at USC, and the deck rates his seat an 8 out of 10. First, the Trojans went 9-4 a season ago but just 2-3 in games decided by 10 points or less. Then the close losses stacked up, including a 34-32 defeat to Illinois and a 34-24 loss to Notre Dame. Also, Riley is only 11-7 against Big Ten teams since the move west. Because of that record, 2026 reads like a make-or-break year in Los Angeles.
Jayden Maiava And A Top-Ten Offense
USC’s offense finished 8th nationally in total offense in 2025, with the passing game ranking 5th. Luke Huard runs the unit as offensive coordinator, so the system carries over this fall. First, quarterback Jayden Maiava returns after a redshirt-senior transfer season from UNLV. Then his splits tell the story, with 22 touchdowns to 3 interceptions in wins and 8 touchdowns to 7 interceptions in losses. Also, Waymond Jordan and King Miller headline a backfield with 67 percent of the production back. Meanwhile the offensive line returns Alani Noa, Elijah Paige and Tobias Raymond up front. Because that group is largely intact, Maiava inherits a veteran cast in the Big Ten.
Gary Patterson’s Defense Reset
Gary Patterson takes over a USC defense that ranked 49th nationally in total defense a season ago. First, the rushing defense finished 58th, the softest number on that side of the ball. Then the scoring defense sat 51st, a mark Patterson built his career fixing at TCU. Also, Jide Abasiri anchors the line while Kameryn Crawford and Braylan Shelby lead the linebackers. Meanwhile Christian Pierce and Marcelles Williams return in the secondary with 64 percent of the production back. Because that veteran core stays put, Patterson has real pieces to climb in the Big Ten.
The Big Ten Schedule And The Win Total
USC opens the year against San Jose State and Fresno State before Big Ten play arrives. First, Louisiana and Rutgers round out the soft early slate.
