Dabo Swinney And The Clemson Hot Seat
This Clemson Tigers 2026 preview opens with a head coach who refuses to cool off. Dabo Swinney owns a 187-53 career record in Death Valley. So the deck still rates his seat a modest 3 out of 10. First, Clemson went 7-6 a season ago. That was a rare down year by its own lofty standard. Then the close-game math stung the most. The Tigers went just 1-3 in games decided by seven points or less. Those results included a 17-10 loss to LSU and a wild 46-45 loss to Duke. Because of that stretch, 2026 reads like a bounce-back season.
Christopher Vizzina Takes Over The Offense
Clemson’s offense ranked 64th nationally in total offense in 2025. Scoring offense sat 72nd, and the run game landed down at 105th. Chad Morris runs the room as offensive coordinator. So the scheme resets around a new starter this fall. First, redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina steps in after one career start against SMU. He went 29 of 42 for 317 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in that game. Then the receiver room returns T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. on the outside. Tight end Olsen Patt-Henry comes back as well, and Harris Sewell anchors the line. Because those pieces return, Vizzina inherits a cast that already knows the system.
Tom Allen’s Defense Looks To Climb
Tom Allen runs the Clemson defense after taking over the play-calling. First, the unit finished 55th nationally in total defense a season ago. Then the run defense graded out much better, ranking 16th against the rush. The pass defense lagged behind at 120th. Sammy Brown and Will Heldt lead the way at linebacker. Ashton Hampton returns in the secondary. Because that group brings back 61 percent of its production, Allen has pieces to build around.
The Schedule, Death Valley And The Win Total
Clemson opens the 2026 season on the road at LSU. Then Georgia Southern and North Carolina visit Death Valley. First, a trip to California and a home date with Miami follow in September. Next, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech and a road game at Florida State fill the middle of the slate. From there, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Duke lead into the Palmetto Bowl against South Carolina. What does a Saturday feel like when the Tigers run down the hill and touch Howard’s Rock? The deck sets the Clemson win total at 7.5. The Tigers sit at plus 1400 to win the ACC and plus 700 to make the College Football Playoff. So the hosts weigh the over against Swinney’s bounce-back case.
