UConn Huskies 2026 preview and win total breakdown

UConn Huskies 2026 Preview

The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the UConn Huskies 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 UConn Huskies roster and what to expect as an FBS Independent this season. Can Jason Candle turn a 9-4 Husky team into a winner after leaving Toledo to replace Jim Mora? And who wins the quarterback battle between Tennessee transfer Jake Merklinger and Toledo transfer Kalieb Osborne?

Can an offense that returns just 25 percent of its production reload behind returning lineman Ty Chan and 72 incoming commits? Does Ryan Manalac’s defense have any answers after finishing 124th against the run and 115th in total defense in 2025 with no returning starters? How does an Independent schedule against Maryland, Southern Miss, North Carolina and Wyoming set up for the Huskies? Can UConn clear a win total of 5.5 in Jason Candle’s first season in Storrs? And where’s the betting value on the UConn Huskies win total and College Football Playoff chances at +10000? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.

Jason Candle Takes Over A 9-4 Husky Team

This UConn Huskies 2026 preview starts with a coaching change in Storrs. Jason Candle arrives from Toledo to replace Jim Mora. So the deck rates his hot seat a cool 1 out of 10. His record sits at 0-0 for now. First, the Huskies went 9-4 a season ago. That is one of the program’s better marks as an FBS Independent. Then the close-game meter tells the real story. Because UConn finished 2-2 in one-score games, the margins were thin. So Candle inherits real momentum in Storrs. Now he has to keep the wins coming without Mora.

An Offense Reloading Around A Quarterback Battle

Candle’s offense has plenty to sort out this fall. UConn returns just 25 percent of its production. First, returning lineman Ty Chan headlines the group up front. He is one of the few holdovers on the roster. Then the Huskies leaned on the transfer portal hard. They brought in 72 total commits, split across 16 recruits and 56 transfers. None of them landed as a top-300 name. Meanwhile the quarterback battle is the real headline. Tennessee transfer Jake Merklinger competes with Toledo transfer Kalieb Osborne. Both work under new coordinator Nunzio Campanile. Because Merklinger already knows that system, he enters camp with an early edge.

Ryan Manalac’s Defense Needs A Rebuild

Ryan Manalac takes over a UConn defense with almost nothing to lean on. The deck lists no returning defensive starters. Just 37 percent of the production comes back. First, the 2025 unit ranked 115th nationally in total defense. It also finished 124th against the run, the weakest number on the roster. Then the pass defense held up better at 64th. Scoring defense landed at 81st. Also the incoming class ranked 104th nationally. It adds Toledo linebacker K’Von Sherman and Toledo lineman Esean Carter. Because so much turns over, Manalac builds almost from scratch this fall.

The Independent Schedule And The Win Total

UConn plays a true Independent schedule in 2026. So there is no conference title to chase this fall. There are no league odds on the board either. First, the slate opens with Lafayette at home. Then Maryland, Southern Miss and Miami of Ohio arrive early. Also Syracuse, Temple and UMass fill the regional matchups. From there the back half brings Air Force and North Carolina. James Madison, Old Dominion and a long trip to Wyoming follow. Finally the deck sets the UConn win total at 5.5. The Huskies sit at +10000 to make the College Football Playoff. So the hosts weigh whether Candle clears that number in Hartford.
