South Alabama 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the South Alabama Jaguars 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 South Alabama Jaguars roster and what to expect in the Sun Belt this season. Can Major Applewhite cool a 6-out-of-10 coaching hot seat after an 11-14 start in Mobile and a 4-8 finish that included a 2-4 mark in one-score games? And is Bishop Davenport the answer at quarterback for Paul Petrino’s offense?
Can an offense that ranked 75th nationally but 18th in rushing get more balanced now that Bishop Davenport is the clear option under center? Does the Todd Orlando defense bounce back after finishing 76th in total defense, 111th in scoring and 103rd against the run a season ago? Can Ethan Hubbard, Tirrell Johnson Jr., Emmanuel Waller and Jayvon Henderson anchor a roster that returns just 51 percent of its offense and 37 percent of its defense? What does a Saturday feel like at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile? Can South Alabama survive a road trip to Kentucky and a Sun Belt gauntlet that runs through Louisiana, Troy and Southern Miss? And where’s the betting value on the South Alabama Jaguars win total, Sun Belt odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Applewhite On The Hot Seat In Mobile
This South Alabama 2026 preview starts with a coach on the hot seat. Major Applewhite carries an 11-14 record in Mobile. The deck rates his seat a 6 out of 10. First, the Jaguars finished 4-8 a season ago. Then they went just 2-4 in one-score games. Also close were a 33-31 loss to Tulane and a 31-24 loss to Troy. A 15-14 defeat to Arkansas State stung too. Because of that close-game math, 2026 is a referendum season for Applewhite.

Bishop Davenport And A Run-First Offense
South Alabama’s offense ranked 75th nationally in 2025. The scoring offense sat 76th, and the passing game lagged at 114th. Paul Petrino calls the plays as offensive coordinator. First, the rushing attack was the strength at 18th. Then quarterback Bishop Davenport returns as the top option under center. Also, Ethan Hubbard anchors a returning offensive line. Meanwhile the group brings back 51 percent of its production. Next, South Alabama signed 35 recruits and 12 transfers with no top-300 names.
Todd Orlando’s Defense Needs A Rebuild
Todd Orlando and J. Washington run the South Alabama defense. First, the group ranked 76th nationally in total defense a season ago. Then the scoring defense finished 111th and the rushing defense sat at 103rd. Also, the pass defense was the bright spot at 44th. Meanwhile the Jaguars return just 37 percent of their defensive production. Orlando rebuilds around Tirrell Johnson Jr. and Emmanuel Waller at linebacker. From there, Jayvon Henderson anchors the secondary.

The Schedule, Hancock Whitney And The Win Total
South Alabama opens at home against SE Louisiana. First, road trips to Tulane and Kentucky test the Jaguars early. Then Ohio, ULM and Arkansas State round out the slate before the bye. Next, Marshall, Louisiana Tech and Louisiana bring the Sun Belt grind. Also, the Battle for the Belt against Troy comes at home. From there, Southern Miss and Appalachian State finish the year. What does a Saturday feel like at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile? The deck sets the South Alabama win total at 5.5. So the Jaguars sit at plus 1300 to win the Sun Belt and plus 30000 to make the Playoff.
