Lance Taylor And The Defending MAC Champions
This Western Michigan Broncos 2026 preview starts with a team defending a MAC title. Lance Taylor enters the season with a 20-19 record in Kalamazoo. So the deck rates his seat a 1 out of 10, one of the coldest marks in the MAC. First, Western Michigan finished 10-4 a season ago and won the league. Then the Broncos went 5-2 in games decided by 10 points or less. Because of that title run, Taylor arrives in 2026 with the program pointed up.
Broc Lowry And An Offense With Room To Climb
Western Michigan’s offense ranked 103rd nationally in 2025, with the passing game sitting way down at 131st. Walt Bell runs the unit as offensive coordinator, and the system carries plenty of upside. First, Broc Lowry returns at quarterback after winning 2025 MAC Offensive Player of the Year following his transfer from Indiana. Then Jalen Buckley anchors the backfield behind a rushing attack that ranked 16th in the country. Also Aveion Chenault and Baylin Brooks give Lowry proven targets on the outside. Meanwhile the group returns 60 percent of its production, so the pieces are already in place.
Greer Martini Takes Over A Stout Defense
The Western Michigan defense was the strength of the roster in 2025. First, the unit ranked 17th nationally in total defense a season ago. Then it finished 9th in scoring defense and 18th against the pass, elite numbers for the MAC. Greer Martini steps in as the new defensive coordinator to keep that standard going. Because the group returns just 42 percent of its production, Martini has to reload fast. Also the schedule hands him early tests before MAC play, so the defense sets up as the swing factor for the Broncos.
The Schedule, Waldo Stadium And The Win Total
Western Michigan opens 2026 with a Week 1 trip to Michigan before Monmouth and Rice come to Kalamazoo. First, a showcase date with Boise State follows to close the non-conference slate. Then the MAC grind starts at Buffalo, with a bye leading into Kent State.
