The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the Rice Owls 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 Rice Owls roster and what to expect in the American Athletic Conference this season. Can second-year head coach Scott Abell build on a 5-8 debut while sitting at just a 1 out of 10 on the hot seat? Will UCF transfer quarterback Jacurri Brown be the perfect trigger man for Vince Munch’s option attack that finished 15th in the country in rushing? Scott Abell’s Option Experiment Enters Year Two
Scott Abell arrived at Rice and did something radical. He ripped out a pass-first offense. Then he installed the option, a scheme most of the American Athletic Conference is not built to stop. That kind of overhaul usually costs a coach his job fast. But Abell sits at just a 1 out of 10 on the hot seat. First, the results bought him patience. Then the roster turned over toward players suited to run it. Now the question is whether year two brings a real jump, because the whole conference has tape on this offense already.
A 5-8 Debut And A Trip To A Bowl Game
The Owls went 5-8 and made a bowl game in Abell’s first year. That is a real building block for this program. They were also 3-2 in games decided by eight points or less. That kind of close-game record can flip either direction. So that 5-8 finish is the baseline year two gets measured against. It also explains why the hot seat sits so low. Because the roster is still learning the option together, those close-game margins should only tighten as the timing sharpens.
Vince Munch’s Offense By The Numbers
Vince Munch runs the offense. The 2025 splits tell the story of a team still finding its footing. Rice finished 15th in the nation in rushing offense. That number alone proves the option was already working on the ground. They also ranked 121st in scoring, 135th in passing and 126th in total offense. So the ceiling here is tied directly to the passing game catching up. First the run game arrived, and now the rest of the offense has to follow. Because a top-15 rushing attack paired with a real passing game changes the whole outlook.
Jacurri Brown Takes Over the Option
The offense runs through a new quarterback. Jacurri Brown is a redshirt senior transfer from UCF who started his career at Miami. He arrives with a résumé most option quarterbacks never get to build. He has 14 total touchdowns to his name, six passing and eight rushing. That split says everything about how he fits. He is a runner first, and that also fits this scheme perfectly. If Brown stays healthy, this attack could be a real problem for the whole conference, because Munch finally has the trigger man the system was built around. Depth behind him is the lingering concern.
Jon Kay’s Defense Has Work To Do
Jon Kay’s defense has work to do too. That unit came in 124th in scoring defense, 106th against the pass, 88th against the run and 100th in total defense. Those numbers look rough on the surface. But a weak offense kept the defense on the field far too often in 2025. So those numbers may look worse than the group really is. Meanwhile, the run defense at 88th is the one number worth watching. It is closest to respectable, and it gives Kay a real foundation to build from together with this portal class.
The Portal Rebuild
Rice brought back 40 percent of its offensive production and 38 percent on defense. So this roster leans heavily on newcomers again. Quinton Jackson returns at running back with linemen Luke Miller and Patrick Valent. That trio gives Munch’s option a real anchor up front. Dillan Botts and Joseph Mutombo anchor the returning defensive front as well. The Owls added 45 commits, 25 recruits and 20 transfers, with no top-300 names. Wide receiver Davis Lane Jr. comes in from Virginia, and center Scott Becker joins from Princeton. The defensive class ranked 106th, with safety Koa Akui from Sacramento State and cornerback Tariq Watson among the additions. Together, that group needs to gel fast.
A Brutal Road Slate
The schedule is not kind early, and that matters for a team still installing an identity. Rice opens with Houston Christian at home. Then the Owls travel to Notre Dame, host Western Michigan and head to Fresno State. UTSA, East Carolina, Tulsa and Florida Atlantic follow after that stretch. The back half then brings North Texas, Tulane, Temple and Army. So there is no easy closing kick either. First the Notre Dame trip tests the ceiling. Next, the Fresno State and East Carolina road games test the floor, because both are winnable games a bowl-caliber Rice team needs to find a way to close.
Where’s The Betting Value
The win total is set at 3.5. That number assumes last year’s close-game luck does not carry over. Rice is +15000 to win the American and +5000 to make the College Football Playoff. Both are long shots, but neither is unreasonable given the direction of the roster. The hosts see the over as a smash play. Because a top-15 rushing offense paired with an 88th-ranked run defense should be live in most of these games. So the market may be underrating a team that already proved it can win close ones a year ago.
Gameday at Rice Stadium
Rice Stadium is a classic, and 2026 marks its 75th season. That is a milestone few programs at this level can claim. This is the place JFK gave his speech about going to the moon. It also hosted Super Bowls back in the day. The stadium has since been renovated to stay modern while keeping its old-school bones. The program has legends of its own too, from Tommy Kramer and Bert Emanuel to Luke McCaffrey. That history is part of the sell for recruits joining this rebuild. Get out to Houston and see the option in person, because this is a good time to catch this program on the rise.
