Tim Albin Takes Over In Charlotte
Charlotte handed the program to Tim Albin this offseason. The pitch is a proven turnaround artist walking into a rebuild. He first built a winner at Ohio, where he made the Bobcats a yearly bowl team. Then he inherits a team coming off a 1-11 season. That kind of number usually buys a coach patience rather than pressure. Also, Pick Dundee rates his hot seat at just 4 out of 10, reflecting exactly that grace period. So the message from the show is simple. Give Albin time, because this is a ground-up rebuild, and the pieces are still coming together in Charlotte.
A 1-11 Season That Offered One Bright Spot
The numbers from 2025 were brutal across the board. Charlotte finished 1-11, a season that ran the previous staff out of town and set up Albin’s rebuild. The one signature result came against Monmouth, a 42-35 win. That game also doubled as the 49ers’ only result decided by seven points or less. So close games were basically nonexistent last fall. That also tells its own story about a roster that got outclassed more often than it got out-executed. Because of that, the win total conversation starts so low. A team with almost no competitive games in year one needs real structural improvement first. Better luck in the fourth quarter alone will not be enough to climb back toward respectability in 2026.
An Offense Getting A Talent Boost
Todd Fitch runs the offense, and there is real talent for him to work with even after a lost 2025. That unit finished 133rd in scoring, 134th in rushing and 133rd in total offense. Those numbers left almost no room to fall further. Also, Charlotte returns 52% of its production, led by tight end Gus McGee and offensive lineman Kristos Fernandez. Then the portal filled the rest of the gaps. The 49ers landed 48 total offensive commits between the transfer portal and the recruiting trail. First, Penn State transfer J’ven Williams headlines that group up front. Meanwhile, Jaen Barnes from Appalachian State and Zyheem Collick from Bryant add speed on the outside. So even modest growth off a rock-bottom floor should look like a real leap for Fitch’s group in year two.
The Quarterback Battle
The 49ers head into fall camp with a genuinely open quarterback competition. Grayson Loftis returns after starting seven games last season once Conner Harrell went down with injury. He already has live reps under his belt in this system. Meanwhile, Harrell is back in the room too, healthy and pushing for his old job back. But the name Pick keeps circling all offseason is Cole Gonzalez. He is the Western Carolina transfer who threw 28 touchdowns at the FCS level before a stop at Oklahoma. That kind of production is hard to keep off the field. So the door stays wide open into the season. Then whoever wins the job sets the ceiling for everything Fitch wants to do on offense.
Who Holds Up The Defense
The defense is the tougher project, and new coordinator Nate Faanes has plenty to fix. Charlotte ranked 135th in total defense in 2025, 132nd in scoring defense and 131st against the pass. Those numbers put this unit near the bottom of the sport. Also, the 49ers return just 34% of last year’s production, the leanest returning group on the roster. But there are real anchors in place. First, Jamarrion Solomon holds down the line. Then Jaylon Johnson and Kadin Schmitz lead a physical linebacker group, and CJ Clinkscales returns in the secondary. Meanwhile, Charlotte hit the transfer portal hard to fill everything else around them. So the front seven and the back end are the two units worth tracking closest this fall.
The Grind Through The AAC
The path to a bowl game is not easy. Charlotte opens with The Citadel at home. Then it hits the road for two brutal non-conference tests at Ole Miss and Appalachian State before the American Athletic Conference slate even begins. Next, the league portion brings Louisiana, Memphis, Temple, Tulane and Rice into the mix. Later the 49ers host East Carolina and close the regular season with Navy. That run also offers a few winnable spots but no easy stretch anywhere on it. So this schedule asks a rebuilding roster to find its footing fast. Finally, there is no soft landing anywhere on the 2026 slate.
Where’s The Betting Value
The betting market is not sold on a fast turnaround. Charlotte’s win total sits at just 2.5 for 2026, one of the lowest numbers in the American Athletic Conference. Also, the futures market prices the 49ers at +30000 to win the AAC and +50000 to reach the College Football Playoff. Those are longshot odds that reflect a team still finding its footing under a new staff. But the show leans toward the over. First, Albin has a track record of turning programs around quickly. Then this roster already added talent through the portal at nearly every position of need. So the bet here is real belief that year one under Albin looks nothing like last year. That 1-11 finish is what got the previous staff fired.
