A 6-7 Team That Kept Losing The Close Ones
Utah State went 6-7 in 2025, and the record hides how thin the margins were. First, the Aggies were 0-2 in games decided by eight points or fewer. They dropped a 29-26 overtime heartbreaker to UNLV, then a 25-24 nailbiter to Boise State. Flip either result and the whole season reads differently. Because those margins were that thin, this is not a broken program. It is a team that was in almost every game and still has to learn how to close them.
Bronco Mendenhall And A Program That Is Not Panicking
Bronco Mendenhall enters year two off that 6-7 debut. The show pegs his hot seat at a modest 3 out of 10. Because the guys see this as a program on the rise, they rate the trajectory a 7 out of 10. Also, the coaching tree and alumni list punch above the Aggies’ usual weight. Logan has produced legends on both sides of the ball. Merlin Olsen and Bobby Wagner headline that group, and so do Chris Cooley and Robert Turbin. Coaches who passed through Logan include names like Gary Patterson, Dave Aranda and Josh Heupel. Mendenhall is trying to add the next chapter, not save his job.
McCae Hillstead And Robert Anae Keep The Offense Moving
The offense is the reason for optimism. Utah State finished 2025 ranked 36th in scoring and 40th in total offense. Then the passing game checked in 48th, and the run game sat 62nd. First, McCae Hillstead headlines the quarterback room. He is a redshirt sophomore who routed back through BYU. Now OC Robert Anae has the keys in his hands. Also returning is running back Javen Jacobs. The offensive line is built around George Maile, Tavo Motu’apuaka and returner Jimmy Liston. Then the portal brought in tackle John Randle Jr. He arrived from Purdue, joining fellow transfer tackle Seth Wilfred. Wideout Javon Robinson also arrives to give Hillstead another target. Because the offense returns just 40 percent of its production, the new faces have to hit right away.
Nick Howell Inherits A Defense That Has To Be Fixed
The defense is the whole ballgame. Utah State ranked 131st in total defense in 2025, and 125th against the pass. Then it checked in 110th against the run and 90th in scoring defense. New coordinator Nick Howell takes over a unit that returns 55 percent of its production. That group is led by defensive linemen Tyree Morris and Carson Tujague. Linebackers Chris Joe and Bronson Olevao Jr. also return, together with DB Brevin Hamblin. Because Howell also reloaded through the portal, the additions matter too. He added DL Ta’avili Tuitama, linebackers Jeremiah Holmes and Harrison Taggart, corner Antonio Bluiett and safety Chapman Lewis. If that group gets to even average, the close losses turn into wins.
Logan Home Field And A Schedule With Teeth
Maverik Stadium and Merlin Olsen Field in Logan remain the selling point. It is a genuine home-field edge tucked against the mountains. The Aggies will need it, because the road is rough. First, Utah State opens with Idaho State at home. Then the Aggies travel to Washington in Seattle. Next comes Utah in the Battle of the Brothers in Salt Lake City, and later a trip to Oregon State in Corvallis. Boise State, Washington State, Colorado State and Fresno State also round out a slate with no easy stretch.
The Numbers: 4.5 Wins, Pac-12 And Playoff Odds
The market has a clear read on Utah State’s move to the Pac-12. The win total sits at 4.5 wins. The Aggies are also priced at +1100 to win the Pac-12 and +10000 to reach the College Football Playoff. That number is built on a defense that finished near the bottom of the country. Also weighing on the number is a brand new conference with no track record. Because so much is unproven, the bet comes down to one question. First, do you trust the offense to keep climbing? Then, does the portal defense clear four and a half in the Pac-12?
