East Carolina 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the East Carolina Pirates 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 East Carolina Pirates roster and what to expect in the American Athletic Conference this season. Can Blake Harrell keep the thing rolling after going 14-5 since he took the job and closing out a 9-4 year? Does a quarterback room with Miami transfer Emory Williams and Mitch Griffis finally settle the biggest question on the roster? And can new coordinator Jordan Davis keep an offense humming that finished 19th in the country in total yards a season ago?
Can Brock Spalding carry the receiving corps when the Pirates bring back just 33 percent of their offensive production? Will portal adds like Landon Sides and Ray Ray Joseph give Williams enough to throw to? Can Jasiyah Robinson up front and DJ Johnson Jr. at linebacker help Ryan Smith fix a pass defense that ranked 92nd last year? Will Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and the Boneyard be rocking when App State, South Florida and Florida Atlantic come to Greenville? How do the Pirates survive a schedule that opens on the road at Alabama and ships them up to West Point to face Army? And where’s the betting value on the East Carolina Pirates win total, American Athletic Conference odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
A Nine-Win Season That Left Something On The Table
East Carolina went 9-4 in 2025, and the record still left something on the table. First, the Pirates finished 2-2 in games decided by eight points or fewer. They dropped a 24-17 game to NC State, then lost 26-19 to Tulane. But they also beat Memphis 31-27 and knocked off Pittsburgh 23-17. The offense carried a lot of that work. ECU ranked 19th in total offense, 21st through the air, 24th in scoring and 45th on the ground. Because those underlying numbers held up, this was not a lucky team. It was a good roster that could have won even more with a couple of bounces.

Blake Harrell Has ECU Pointed The Right Way
Blake Harrell is 14-5 since he took over in Greenville. The deck puts his hot seat at a 1 out of 10. That is about as safe as it gets. First, he inherited the program mid-stream and still kept it rolling. Then he avoided any bad blunders along the way. He has only lost to the kind of teams you are supposed to lose to. Because of that, the fan base finally has a coach it can build around. Harrell has looked like the guy in a hurry.

Jordan Davis, Emory Williams And A Made-Over Offense
ECU brings in Jordan Davis as the new offensive coordinator. He takes over a unit that finished 19th in the country last fall. The catch is that the Pirates return only 33 percent of their offensive production. Because of that, a lot of this is fresh paint. The quarterback battle is the headline story. Miami transfer Emory Williams started games in Coral Gables. Then he found himself competing with Mitch Griffis, a veteran who came through Texas Tech and Wake Forest. Brock Spalding is the top returning weapon at receiver. Also joining the mix are transfers Landon Sides from North Texas and Ray Ray Joseph from Miami. Running back Ashton Gray was added too, giving the new coordinator some pieces to work with.
Ryan Smith Takes Over A Defense With Work To Do
Ryan Smith is back as coordinator, a familiar face from his years on staff under Mike Houston. He inherits a defense that graded out unevenly in 2025. First, the run defense ranked 26th and the scoring defense ranked 25th, and both held up fine. But the pass defense finished 92nd nationally, and total defense landed at 50th. The good news is the back seven has anchors to build around. DL Jasiyah Robinson and linebacker DJ Johnson Jr. headline that group. Together they return 50 percent of the defense’s production, better than the offense.

A Schedule That Starts In Tuscaloosa
The Pirates do not ease into 2026. First, they open Week 1 on the road at Alabama inside Bryant-Denny. Then they host App State at home in Week 2 before a trip to Old Dominion. The middle of the slate is manageable, with N.C. Central, Rice, UAB, Memphis, Temple and South Florida on the docket. Dowdy-Ficklen should be loud for those home dates. From there, the back end gets tougher. There is a Week 11 trip to Charlotte and a Week 12 visit to Army at West Point. Then a Week 13 home finale against Florida Atlantic closes it out. Because so much of the slate is winnable, there is a clear path to a strong record. That path holds if the quarterback play settles.

The Betting Case On The Pirates
The number to know is 7.5 wins for East Carolina in 2026. The book also lists the Pirates at +800 to win the American Athletic Conference. It also lists them at +2000 to reach the College Football Playoff. First, the bull case is Harrell’s 14-5 track record. Then add a home-heavy stretch against beatable AAC teams. But the bear case is real too. Only a third of the offensive production returns, and the pass defense has to be fixed on the fly. Because of that, the total probably comes down to one thing. How fast Emory Williams or Mitch Griffis grabs the job decides it.
