Joe Harasymiak And A Minutemen Program On The Hot Seat
This Umass Minutemen 2026 preview starts with a coach under pressure. Joe Harasymiak enters the season after an 0-12 finish. So the deck rates his seat a 6 out of 10. First, Umass lost a pair of one-score games last fall. They dropped a 27-26 result to Bryant and a 28-21 decision to Buffalo. Then the winless record put a young staff in referendum territory. Because the Minutemen are also settling into the MAC, 2026 could define the program.
Pop Watson III And An Offense Looking To Climb
Umass ranked 136th nationally in total offense in 2025. The scoring and rushing numbers sat near the bottom too. New coordinator Max Warner takes over the play-calling. So the system resets around a transfer quarterback. First, Virginia Tech transfer Pop Watson III arrives as a redshirt junior. The deck calls him the “hometown hero” at the position. Then the Minutemen return roughly 49 percent of their offensive production. That gives Watson a familiar cast. Because the group added 45 new commits, the depth chart also looks different. Meanwhile the passing offense, which finished 120th, has the most room to grow.
Jared Keyte’s Defense Needs A Step Forward
Jared Keyte runs a Umass defense with one real strength. First, the pass defense finished 55th nationally. That was the best number on the roster. Then the rushing defense lagged at 134th. That dragged the total defense down to 129th. Because the run fits broke down too often, the front seven is the clear priority. Meanwhile the unit returns about 43 percent of its production. So Keyte leans on holdovers and new transfers to raise the floor.
The MAC Schedule And The Win Total
Umass opens on the road at Rutgers. First, an early run of non-conference and FCS games gives the Minutemen a chance to bank wins. Sacred Heart is part of that soft open. Then the MAC schedule arrives. League dates with Buffalo, UConn, Ball State, Toledo and Bowling Green shape the season. From there the math gets interesting. Because of it, the deck sets the Umass win total at 2.5. Also priced in are the Minutemen at plus 25000 to win the MAC. They sit at plus 25000 to make the College Football Playoff. So the hosts weigh the over against a first full season in a new league.
