Timmy Chang Keeps A Cool Seat In Year Four
This Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 2026 preview starts with a coach the deck barely worries about. Timmy Chang carries a 22-29 record in Honolulu, so the deck rates his seat a 1 out of 10, one of the coolest marks on the whole board. First, Hawaii finished 9-4 a season ago in a real breakthrough year. Then the Rainbow Warriors went 3-2 in games decided by nine points or less, including a 44-35 win over Air Force. Also on the ledger were a 23-20 win over Stanford and a 35-31 win over California. Because of that jump, 2026 reads like a program on the rise rather than a coach under fire.
Micah Alejado And A Run-And-Shoot Attack
Hawaii’s offense ranked 63rd nationally in total offense in 2025, with the passing game sitting all the way up at 8th. Anthony Arceneaux runs the show as offensive coordinator, so the run-and-shoot system carries over into this fall. First, redshirt sophomore Micah Alejado returns after completing 66.3 percent of his throws for 3,106 yards and 24 touchdowns. Then Pofele Ashlock comes back as the top target out wide at receiver. Dean Briski and Ethan Spencer also return to anchor the offensive line up front. Meanwhile the rushing attack finished 128th, so the ground game is the clear place to improve. From there, the group returns 54 percent of its production around Alejado.
Dennis Thurman’s Defense Resets
Dennis Thurman is back running the Hawaii defense after a long NFL coaching career on the sideline. First, the unit ranked 61st nationally in total defense a season ago. Then the pass defense finished 84th, the softer number on that side of the ball. Lesterlaisene Lagafuaina and Jamih Otis return at linebacker, and Elijah Palmer anchors the secondary. Because the group returns just 37 percent of its production, Thurman has to rebuild the back seven fast. Also the incoming class ranked 125th nationally, so the coordinator leans on development over blue-chip star power.
The Schedule, The Islands And The Win Total
Hawaii opens the entire country in Week 0 at home against Stanford before UNLV and New Mexico State follow. First, Arizona State visits in a marquee non-conference test on the island. Then the schedule runs through San Jose State, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, UTEP and a Week 11 date with FCS power North Dakota State. From there, Nevada and Sacramento State close out the regular season. What does a late kickoff feel like at the Ching Complex in Honolulu under the lights? The deck sets the Hawaii win total at 7.5, with the Rainbow Warriors at plus 400 to win the Mountain West and plus 2800 to reach the College Football Playoff.
