Middle Tennessee 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders roster and what to expect in Conference USA. Can Derek Mason survive a 9-out-of-10 coaching hot seat in year three? And is RS sophomore Roman Gagliano the answer at quarterback after a 471-yard breakout at Western Kentucky?
Can new coordinator Anthony Scelfo lift an offense that ranked 81st in total offense last year? Does Brian Stewart’s defense bounce back after finishing 95th and 124th against the pass? What can a roster returning 34 percent on offense and 37 percent on defense build around? Do transfers like Minnesota’s Reese Tripp and Washington’s Dyson McCutcheon move the needle? How does a schedule with a money game at Kansas and the 100 Miles of Hate rivalry set up? What does a Saturday feel like at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro? And where’s the value on the Blue Raiders win total, Conference USA odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Derek Mason On The Hot Seat In Year Three
This Middle Tennessee 2026 preview starts with a coach on the hot seat. Derek Mason enters year three with a 6-18 record in Murfreesboro. So the deck rates his seat a 9 out of 10, one of the hottest marks in the country. First, Middle Tennessee finished 3-9 a season ago. Then the Blue Raiders went 2-4 in one-score games. So the margin between another losing year and a bowl push stayed thin. Because of that, 2026 reads like a referendum on Mason.

Roman Gagliano And An Offense Under New Direction
Middle Tennessee’s offense ranked 81st nationally in total offense in 2025. Scoring offense sat down at 107th. Derek Mason hands play-calling to new coordinator Anthony Scelfo. First, RS sophomore Roman Gagliano takes over at quarterback. He totaled 471 yards of offense in his first career start at Western Kentucky. Then the passing game has a base, since the group ranked 27th through the air. The run game, though, sat 121st. Also, receiver AJ Jones returns to anchor the perimeter. Meanwhile the offense brings back just 34 percent of its production. So Scelfo leans on transfers like Minnesota lineman Reese Tripp to rebuild up front.
Brian Stewart’s Defense Needs A Turnaround
Brian Stewart runs a Middle Tennessee defense that finished 95th in total defense last year. First, the pass defense ranked 124th, the weakest number on the roster. Then the run defense held up better at 57th. So there is a foundation on that side of the ball. Linebacker Reggie Johnson returns with defensive backs Jackson Lowe and Kalen Woods. Washington transfer safety Dyson McCutcheon joins the room. Because the group brings back 37 percent of its production, Stewart has some continuity. Still, the secondary has to tighten up fast in Conference USA.

The Schedule, The Beer Garden And The Win Total
Middle Tennessee opens at home against Murray State. A road trip to Marshall follows. First, Nevada, Jacksonville State and a money game at Kansas round out the non-conference slate. Then Delaware visits after the bye. The Conference USA run brings FIU, Kennesaw State and the 100 Miles of Hate rivalry with Western Kentucky. From there, road trips to Liberty and Sam Houston lead into a New Mexico State finale. What does a Saturday feel like at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro? Also, the Blue Raider Beer Garden sits at field level in the south endzone. The deck sets the Middle Tennessee win total at 4.5. The Blue Raiders are plus 5500 to win Conference USA and plus 50000 to make the College Football Playoff. So the hosts weigh the over against Mason’s hot seat.
