Louisiana Ragin Cajuns 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 Louisiana Ragin Cajuns roster and what to expect in the Sun Belt this season. Can Michael Desormeaux cool a 7-out-of-10 hot seat after a 29-25 run in Lafayette? And is Lunch Winfield the answer at quarterback for Tim Leger’s offense?
Can an offense that ranked 100th nationally but 32nd in rushing get more balanced through the air? Does the Jim Salgado defense bounce back after ranking 109th overall and 118th against the run? Can Shelton Sampson Jr., Brock Chappell and Brent Gordon Jr. anchor a roster returning 63 percent of its offense but 35 percent of its defense? What does a Saturday feel like at Cajun Field in Lafayette? Can Louisiana survive a road trip to USC and the Red Stick Rivalry at Louisiana Tech? And where’s the betting value on the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns win total, Sun Belt odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Michael Desormeaux And A Hot Seat In Lafayette
This Louisiana Ragin Cajuns 2026 preview opens with a coach who can feel the heat. Michael Desormeaux carries a 29-25 record at Louisiana. The deck rates his seat a 7 out of 10. First, the Ragin Cajuns finished 6-7 a season ago. They also went 3-3 in games decided by seven points or fewer. Then the close losses stung, including a 14-12 defeat at Rice and a 34-31 loss to Eastern Michigan. Meanwhile the wins over Marshall, Arkansas State and ULM all landed by a single score. Because of that razor-thin margin, 2026 reads like a make-or-break year in Lafayette.

Lunch Winfield And A Tim Leger Offense
Louisiana’s offense ranked 100th nationally in total offense in 2025. The scoring offense sat at 80th, and the passing game fell to 123rd. First, the ground game carried the group at 32nd in the country. Coordinator Tim Leger keeps calling the shots. Then Lunch Winfield takes the huddle as a redshirt junior. He made eight starts a season ago. He completed 58.8 percent of his throws for 20 total touchdowns against seven interceptions. Also, the offense returns 63 percent of its production. So Shelton Sampson Jr., Brock Chappell and Caden Jensen give Winfield a familiar cast. From there, the line leans on Matthew Broussard, Cooper Fordham and Kaden Moreau.
Jim Salgado’s Defense Needs A Step Forward
Jim Salgado runs a Louisiana defense that has plenty of work ahead. First, the unit ranked 109th nationally in total defense a year ago. Then the rushing defense finished 118th, the softest number on the roster. The scoring defense sat at 97th, and the pass defense landed at 79th. Meanwhile the group returns just 35 percent of its production. So Salgado leans on Fitzgerald West Jr. up front and Brent Gordon Jr. in the secondary. Because the roster added 41 transfers among 62 total commits, the two-deep looks very different in 2026.

The Schedule, Cajun Field And The Win Total
Louisiana opens at home against Lamar before a cross-country road trip to USC. First, UAB, Charlotte and Arkansas State follow as the Sun Belt grind ramps up. Then the Red Stick Rivalry at Louisiana Tech, Troy and Southern Miss headline the midseason. From there, South Alabama, ULM, Coastal Carolina and Georgia State close the regular season. What does a Saturday feel like at Cajun Field when Lafayette packs the stands? The deck sets the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns win total at 7.5. The program sits at plus 750 to win the Sun Belt. It also goes off at plus 50000 to reach the College Football Playoff. So the hosts weigh the over against Desormeaux’s hot seat and a defense in transition.
