Marshall 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the Marshall Thundering Herd 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 Marshall roster and what to expect in the Sun Belt this season. Can Tony Gibson build on a 5-7 debut with his hot seat reading just 2 out of 10? And is returning quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson ready to take a leap in Rod Smith’s offense?
Can an offense that finished 48th nationally take a step with 61 percent of its production back? Can new coordinator Brad Lambert fix a defense that finished 108th in scoring and 103rd against the run? Can Javae Gilmore, Josh Pierre-Louis and Daytione Smith carry a unit that returns just 36 percent of its production? How does a schedule that opens at Penn State before the Sun Belt slate set up for the Herd? Is 7.5 wins the right number for a team sitting at plus 1100 to win the Sun Belt? And where’s the betting value on the Marshall win total, Sun Belt odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Tony Gibson Enters Year Two With A Cool Seat
This Marshall 2026 preview opens with a head coach the deck is not sweating. Tony Gibson went 5-7 in his debut season. Still, the deck rates his hot seat a 2 out of 10, among the coolest marks on the board. First, that record came with a rough split in close games. Marshall went 1-4 in games decided by 10 points or less. Then a one-point loss to Appalachian State and a 24-19 defeat to Georgia Southern stung the most. Because those margins flipped so easily, the deck grades the program a 6 out of 10 and rising. So year two is a chance for Gibson to turn near-misses into wins.

Carlos Del Rio-Wilson And A Returning Offense
Marshall’s offense graded out respectably in 2025. The Herd ranked 48th nationally in total offense and 22nd in rushing, though the passing game lagged at 91st. Offensive coordinator Rod Smith runs the system, so the scheme carries into year two. First, quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson returns to lead the attack after starting a season ago. Then the cast brings back receivers Adrian Norton and De’Andre Tamarez and tight end Toby Payne. Linemen Tariq Montgomery and Jalen Slappy return up front. Also the room adds 46 commits, 19 recruits and 27 transfers, led by West Virginia wideout Christian Hamilton. Because the unit returns 61 percent of its production, Del Rio-Wilson inherits real continuity.
Brad Lambert Takes Over A Defense In Need
The bigger project sits on defense. Marshall ranked 76th in total defense, 103rd against the run and 108th in scoring defense in 2025. New coordinator Brad Lambert steps in to reset the unit. First, the group returns just 36 percent of its production, the thinnest number on the roster. Then linebacker Javae Gilmore headlines the returners alongside defensive backs Josh Pierre-Louis and Daytione Smith. Also the incoming class ranks 121st nationally, so Lambert is rebuilding more than reloading. Because the run defense finished 103rd a season ago, tightening the front is the clearest path to more wins.

The Schedule And The Marshall Win Total
Marshall opens the 2026 season on the road at Penn State. First, the early slate brings Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, Gardner-Webb, James Madison and Coastal Carolina. Then the Sun Belt gauntlet arrives with South Alabama, Old Dominion, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State and Georgia State. The Herd close the regular season against ULM. From there, the home dates at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington shape how far this group can climb. What does a Saturday feel like when the Thundering Herd faithful pack the stands? The deck sets the Marshall win total at 7.5. Also the Herd sit at plus 1100 to win the Sun Belt. The deck gives them no path to the College Football Playoff. So the hosts weigh the over against a schedule with just one power-conference road trip.
