Year Three For Jeff Lebby
Jeff Lebby enters his third season in Starkville, and the pressure is obvious. He is just 7-18 through his first two years. So the seat is clearly warm heading into 2026. Lebby built his name on offense with Oklahoma roots, part of the Brent Venables staff before he took this job. Now he has to turn that pedigree into actual wins. Both hosts agree the margin for error is thin this fall. A bowl trip would cool things off in a hurry. Another losing season, though, likely does not earn him a fourth year. Because of that, every result carries real weight.
An Unsettled Quarterback Room
The biggest question sits at quarterback. First, there is no clear starter heading into the year. So the hosts frame it as an open battle rather than a settled job. Whoever wins that competition inherits a rebuilt supporting cast around him. Because of the turnover, the offense has to find an identity fast. That matters even more against a schedule this tough. Still, an unsettled room is not automatically a bad thing. A young passer could grow into the role as the season moves along. For now, though, the uncertainty is a big reason the hosts stay cautious on the year.
Zach Arnett Returns To Run The Defense
The defense gets a familiar voice in 2026. Zach Arnett, the former Mississippi State head coach, is back to run that side of the ball. So he arrives already knowing the program and the league. That continuity should help a group learning a new plan. The hosts think the unit can take a step forward under him. Still, everyone is absorbing the scheme at the same time. Because the SEC slate is brutal, there is little room to grow slowly. Meanwhile, the offense’s questions put even more on the defense to keep games close. That is a tall order in year one of the reset.
A Brutal Nine-Game SEC Schedule
The calendar is the biggest obstacle on the board. First, Mississippi State plays a nine-game SEC schedule in 2026. It also drops its annual game with Kentucky. Then it keeps a nonconference road trip up to Minnesota. The year opens at home against ULM, which sets a manageable tone early. So the real trouble comes in the middle of the season. Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas all come in a row. Because that stretch is so loaded, the hosts point to it as the reason they are down on the win total. Meanwhile, the back half offers little relief.
The Egg Bowl And Gameday In Stark Vegas
Home games still carry real weight for this program. Davis Wade Stadium opened in 1914, and it stands as one of the oldest venues in the sport. So when the cowbells ring in Stark Vegas, it becomes a genuine edge. The atmosphere is a real piece of the identity here. Then the season builds toward the Egg Bowl at Ole Miss to close things out. Lebby is 0-2 in that rivalry so far. Because of that, a win there would change the whole conversation around his tenure. Meanwhile, an FCS date with Tennessee Tech sits right before the finale. That trap game cannot be overlooked.
Where’s The Betting Value
Both hosts land firmly on the same side. First, the win total sits at 4.5, and they both lock the under. Mississippi State is also listed at plus 2500 to win the SEC and plus 3500 to make the College Football Playoff. So the market already sees a hard road ahead. The roster questions and the schedule both point down together. Because of that, the under is the clear play for the hosts. A path to five or more wins looks narrow at best. Meanwhile, four or fewer feels very much in range. That is why they are comfortable betting the number down.
