PJ Fleck Keeps Rowing The Boat
Minnesota went 8-5 again in 2025. That is the fourth straight season in the win column for PJ Fleck. His record in Minneapolis now sits at 66-44. The Gophers were also clutch when it mattered, going 4-1 in games decided by seven points or fewer. Because of that, Fleck barely registers on the hot seat at 1 out of 10. The deck also grades the program a 7 out of 10 and asks if it is still on the rise. The floor here is steady. So the real question is the ceiling.
Drake Lindsey Enters A Pivotal Year Two
Drake Lindsey flashed as a redshirt freshman. He completed 63.5 percent of his throws for 2,432 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just 6 picks. Now he needs help. The 2025 offense ranked 102nd in scoring, 102nd in passing, and dead last at 129th in both rushing and total offense. New coordinator Greg Harbaugh, no relation to Jim or John, inherits that mess. Minnesota also returns 71 percent of its offensive production, including Darius Taylor at running back and Jalen Smith out wide. The portal also brought reinforcements. First, Perry Thompson arrives from Auburn. Then tackle Bennet Warren joins from Tennessee, and tight end Kaden Helms comes over from Oklahoma.
Danny Collins And A Defense That Travels
The defense is the reason Minnesota stays in games. Under coordinator Danny Collins, the unit finished 34th in total defense and 27th against the run in 2025. The Gophers also bring back 65 percent of their defensive production. Anthony Smith anchors the line, and Maverick Baranowski and Jaxon Howard lead the linebackers. Meanwhile, Kerry Brown and John Nestor return in the secondary. The incoming class also ranks 37th nationally and adds top-300 lineman Howie Johnson plus transfers Naquan Crowder, Xion Chapman, and Aydan West. So this side of the ball should keep every score close.
A Big Ten Gauntlet Awaits
The schedule sets up soft, then bites. Minnesota opens with Eastern Illinois, Mississippi State, and Akron at home before a Week 4 trip to Washington. The Big Ten slate is also a grind. First, Michigan visits Minneapolis. Then come road games at Purdue, Indiana, Penn State, and Wisconsin. The Iowa game also brings Floyd of Rosedale home to the Twin Cities, and Fleck has struggled in that rivalry. The Indiana trip is dangerous, since the deck lists the Hoosiers as the 2025 national champions. Finally, the season closes with the Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe at Camp Randall. A Week 7 bye is the only breather.
Where Is The Betting Value
The number to beat is 5.5 wins. History favors the over, because Fleck teams keep finding a way into bowl season. The long shots are exactly that. Minnesota also sits at +30000 to win the Big Ten and +3500 to make the College Football Playoff. So the value case rests on the win total and a defense that keeps close games close. Finally, the championship tickets are lottery plays.
