Washington Commanders Preview
The Washington Commanders went from one of the biggest surprises in 2024 to one of the biggest surprises of 2025 in the other direction. As our journey through all 32 NFL team previews continues, the Washington Commanders are up next. They check in as the second NFC East team we’re looking at. Let’s dive in and look at this 2026 Washington Commanders preview.
Washington Commanders Recap
Before we get to know 2026’s Washington Commanders team, let’s rewind to 2023. The Commanders went just 4-13. Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett weren’t getting the job done. Ron Rivera was fired as the head coach. Dan Quinn was hired to replace him, and Jayden Daniels was drafted to be the quarterback of the future. Turns out, the Commanders didn’t have to wait for the future; the future was now. In 2024, they were the league’s biggest surprise, going 12-5 and making an appearance in the NFC Championship game.
Then came 2025, a season plagued by injury. Regression caught up with them quickly, as did defensive struggles. The biggest issue, Jayden Daniels couldn’t stay healthy. He missed 10 games in 2025, battling hamstring, knee, and a brutal-looking elbow dislocation he suffered against the eventual Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks.
Offseason Moves
The down season led to sweeping changes. Dan Quinn remained the head coach, but they changed both coordinators. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr were both relieved of their duties. They were replaced by David Blough on offense; he was promoted from quarterbacks coach. Daronte Jones joins the staff from the Minnesota Vikings to take over defensive responsibilities.
A lot of the veteran “names” on the team departed in the offseason, at least for now. Bobby Wagner, Von Miller, Zach Ertz, Deebo Samuel, and Austin Ekeler are all free agents, but none have signed elsewhere in 2026 yet. They did make big splashes in free agency, bringing over Odafe Oweh from the Ravens at edge. K’Lavon Chaisson joins the team from the Patriots to help fill out the edge rusher role. Continuing their focus on defense, they also signed Leo Chenal, Amik Robertson, and Nick Cross. On offense, they added tight end Chig Okonkwo and running back Rachaad White. Jayden Daniels Over 550.5 Rushing Yards (-114)
If the Washington Commanders are going to return to 2024 form, they need Jayden Daniels to run the ball again. That was a huge part of his game in 24, stacking up almost 900 yards on the ground. Even last season, in just seven games, he was already pushing close to 300 yards. Daniels needs to stay healthy and play his game. It’s that simple for this bet, and I’m betting on him to be back to true form in 2026.
