UCLA 2026 Preview
The College Football Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its 138 college football team preview series with the UCLA Bruins 2026 Season Preview. Pick Dundee aka (@TheColbyD) & Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) break down the 2026 UCLA Bruins roster and what to expect in the Big Ten this season. Can new head coach Bob Chesney turn around a program that went just 3-9 in 2025? Will the James Madison rebuild blueprint that took him to a Sun Belt title travel to Westwood? Is Nico Iamaleava ready to take a leap in year two after a season that finished 126th in scoring offense?
How high can Nico Iamaleava climb with running back Wayne Knight and a rebuilt receiver room behind him? Can returning defensive backs Scooter Jackson, Cole Martin & Rodrick Pleasant anchor a unit that ranked 127th in scoring defense a year ago? Will the wave of James Madison transfers like edge rusher Sahir West give Colin Hitschler’s defense a new identity? What does a fall Saturday at the Rose Bowl feel like with the Bruins finally on the rise? Can Chesney survive brutal road trips to Oregon, Minnesota & Michigan in a loaded Big Ten? And where’s the betting value on the UCLA Bruins win total, Big Ten odds and College Football Playoff chances? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
A New Era Under Bob Chesney
UCLA is starting over. The Bruins went just 3-9 in 2025. So they turned to Bob Chesney. He first built winners at Holy Cross with four straight playoff berths. Then he added a Sun Belt title at James Madison before Westwood came calling. Now he takes over a proud program that has been down for years. His hot seat sits at just 1 out of 10, and that number also reflects a fan base that understands this rebuild takes time. In other words, Chesney has the runway to build this thing the right way.

Nico Iamaleava And The Offense
The offense needs a jump. Last season, UCLA ranked 126th in scoring offense and 120th in total offense. Still, the pieces are there. Nico Iamaleava returns at quarterback after transferring in from Tennessee, and he first posted a 64.4 completion percentage with 2,433 total yards and 17 total touchdowns in his debut year. Also, 73% of the offensive production is back. Eugene Brooks and Sam Yoon anchor the line, and then new coordinator Dean Kennedy adds James Madison running back Wayne Knight and receiver Leland Smith to a room that finally has some juice.
A Rebuilt Defense Through The Portal
The defense was the bigger problem. UCLA finished 127th in scoring defense and 119th against the run in 2025. Still, the secondary looks solid. Scooter Jackson, Cole Martin and Rodrick Pleasant all return in the back end. Then Chesney flooded the roster with transfers. Edge rusher Sahir West and nickel DJ Barksdale followed him from James Madison. Maxwell Roy comes over from Ohio State. So coordinator Colin Hitschler has real talent to work with.

The Rose Bowl And A Winnable Big Ten Slate
The schedule sets up well. UCLA opens at Cal, then hosts San Diego State and Purdue in Pasadena. Meanwhile, the toughest trips are Oregon, Minnesota and Michigan. But most of the Big Ten comes west to the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin, Michigan State and Illinois all visit. The season then closes at home against rival USC. In short, there are winnable games all over this slate.

Betting The Bruins In 2026
So where is the value? Vegas set the UCLA win total at 6.5 wins. The Bruins are also +20000 to win the Big Ten and +3000 to make the College Football Playoff. First, Chesney has Nico Iamaleava running the offense. Then he adds a deep James Madison-fueled portal class on both sides of the ball. Finally, a manageable Big Ten slate at the Rose Bowl only helps the case. That combination makes the over worth a long look. SGPN grades the state of the program at 6 out of 10 and on the rise.
