A New Sheriff In Denton
Eric Morris built something special in Denton. He went 12-2 in 2025. Then he cashed in and left for a bigger job. So North Texas needed a new leader fast. Now Neal Brown takes over the Mean Green. Brown ran West Virginia for six straight seasons. Because of that, he understands Power Four football. He also plans to call the offense himself this fall. That choice puts the attack in his hands. Meanwhile the fan base still remembers a special year. First up, though, comes the hard part. So Brown must prove year one can travel. That confidence sets the early tone.
A Total Roster Makeover
The Mean Green return almost nobody this year. In fact zero starters come back on offense. Zero starters come back on defense either. So the depth chart resets completely. Returning production sits at just 28% on offense. Meanwhile it sits at 35% on defense. Because of that, Brown hit the transfer portal hard. North Texas brought in 60 commits overall. Of those, 49 arrived as transfers. Also, only 11 came from high school. Still, none of them cracked the top 300. So the talent is unproven on paper. Then chemistry becomes the biggest early question. First the pieces must simply learn to fit.
Tayven Jackson Runs The Show
Tayven Jackson steps in at quarterback. He arrives most recently from UCF. Before that he stopped at Tennessee and Indiana. Across those years he played 27 games. He also started 16 of them. So he brings real Power Four experience. Then Brown added a backfield around him. Running back JaHiem White transfers in from West Virginia. Also up front comes guard Henry Fenuku from Missouri. Together they must replace a historic unit. Last year that offense ranked first nationally in total yards. It ranked first in scoring too. Meanwhile the passing game ranked second overall. So the bar could not sit higher.
Rebuilding The Stop Unit
The defense also starts completely fresh. Matt Powledge takes over as coordinator. Last year the pass defense ranked eighth nationally. So that unit held up well. But the run defense ranked 132nd overall. That number sits in dead-last territory. Meanwhile the scoring defense ranked 76th nationally. The total defense ranked 77th as well. Because of the run struggles, the trenches are the priority. Powledge added corner Peyton Taylor from Emporia State. Also the front seven still needs bodies. So depth up front becomes job one. First the run fits must tighten. Then the pass coverage can carry more weight.
A Brutal Opening Slate
The schedule offers almost no mercy. First up is a road trip to Indiana. Indiana enters as the defending national champion. So the opener sets a brutal tone. Then comes UNLV back home in Denton. Later the Mean Green visit Navy in Annapolis. That road stretch tests the roster early. Meanwhile the league slate stays loaded too. It brings Tulane and UTSA on the schedule. It also brings UAB, Rice, Charlotte and FAU. So depth will get stressed fast. Because the roster is new, that matters even more. Still, a midseason open date offers one breather. First, though, the team must survive September.
Where’s The Betting Value
Vegas sets the North Texas win total at 5.5. That marks a steep drop from 12 wins. So the market clearly expects regression. But the roster turnover explains the caution. Almost nobody returns from that special team. Meanwhile the Mean Green sit at +25000 to win the American Athletic Conference. They also carry +15000 odds to reach the College Football Playoff. So Vegas sees a rebuild, not a repeat. The program grade lands at 5 out of 10. Still, this looks like a program on the rise. First the wins must come back slowly. Then a Saturday at DATCU Stadium feels normal again. So grab a North Texas Blonde Ale and watch.
