Tony Sanchez Feels The Heat
Tony Sanchez enters 2026 on very thin ice. So far his record in Las Cruces sits at 7-17. Last year the Aggies went 4-8. Now the seat is scorching. In fact, the show grades his hot seat an 8 out of 10. But the close games tell a rough story too. New Mexico State went just 2-4 in games decided by eight points or fewer. So a few bounces could have flipped the season. Still, the bottom line is wins, and those have been scarce.
Trey Hedden Takes The Keys
Trey Hedden arrives from Furman to run the offense. He steps in as a junior transfer. Across his career he owns 20 career starts. In those games he completed 65.5 percent of his throws. He also piled up 4,734 yards with 30 touchdowns and 22 picks. So the arm talent is real. Yet the turnovers are a clear worry. David Yost calls the plays as coordinator. Last year that unit ranked 112th in scoring. The passing game held up better at 45th. But the ground game cratered at 136th. So Yost needs the run to wake up.
Joe Morris Hunts For Stops
Joe Morris returns as defensive coordinator. His group brings back 55 percent of its production. That helps. Sone Aupiu and Tory Gethers anchor the linebacker room. Meanwhile Josiah Charles and Nick Session patrol the secondary. Still, the 2025 numbers were middling. The defense ranked 97th overall. It sat 88th in scoring and 103rd against the pass. So Morris has real fixes to make. But the veteran core gives him a base.
A Schedule With Real Teeth
The opener does the Aggies no favors. First up is Florida State in Week 0. That trip runs to Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. Then a road game at Hawaii looms in Week 2. After that comes the Rio Grande Rivalry with New Mexico. That one lands in Las Cruces. Conference play then brings Liberty, Jacksonville State and Middle Tennessee. So the road to bowl eligibility is steep. Still, the home slate offers a few winnable dates.
Where The Betting Value Lives
The market sets the win total at 4.5. So Vegas expects another lean year. To win Conference USA the Aggies sit at +2500. Making the College Football Playoff runs all the way out to +50000. Meanwhile the show grades the program a 2 out of 10. But it tags the arrow as slightly on the rise. So the question is simple. Does this roster clear 4.5 wins, or fall short again?
