One of the toughest defenses in the league resides in Houston. Can their offense keep up in 2026? Houston has a chance to be a Super Bowl contender this season. They are the next team up as we preview all 32 NFL teams ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Let’s dive in and take a look at the 2026 Houston Texans preview.
Houston Texans Recap
The 2025 season started out disastrously for Houston. They began the season 0-3, typically a death knell to playoff hopes. Only four teams since 1990 had started 0-3 and made the playoffs that season. Then things turned around, ripping off win after win, going on an eight-game win streak even with CJ Stroud missing three games and Davis Mills filling in. They finished the year 12-5, becoming just the fifth team since 1990 to make the playoffs after that 0-3 start.
Their defense was the story of the year for Houston. They ranked second in points allowed for the year, first in total yards allowed, first in sacks, and were top five in turnover differential. Danielle Hunter led the team with 15 sacks; Will Anderson Jr added 12 of his own. CJ Stroud’s performance was alright, but left a little to be desired. The biggest question in 2026 will be if Stroud can revert to his 2024 form.
Houston Texans Preview
The team was aggressive in the off-season. They traded with the Detroit Lions for David Montgomery to answer their running back questions. On the offensive lineTrent Brown was re-signed, Wyatt Teller and Evan Brown joined the team, and they lured Braden Smith away from their division rival Indianapolis Colts. On defense, Reed Blankenship signed a three-year deal, and Marte Mapu joined the team. Jadeveon Clowney also returned home to join an already nasty pass rush.
The team also signed extensions with Will Anderson Jr, Azeez Al-Shaair, Danielle Hunter, Henry To’oto’o, Ka’imi Fairborn, Dalton Shultz, and Ed Ingram. In the NFL Draft, they reiterated their commitment to the offensive line by drafting guard Keylan Rutledge from Georgia Tech in the first round. Kayden McDonald was selected in the second round. The defensive tackle from Ohio State bolsters that defensive line even more. – Cody Zeeb (@Husker_Zeeb)

When you have the best defense in the entire NFL, you’ll lean on the running game a lot. Montgomery played second fiddle in Detroit to Jahmyr Gibbs for obvious reasons. He won’t play second fiddle this year. Montgomery was brought in to be the workhorse back in Houston. He’ll share time with Woody Marks, but this is his job. Last year, Montgomery averaged 4.53 yards per carry. Montgomery should be a 1,000-yard rusher in this offense.
