Utah’s case came first, and it opened with travel. Getting to Ames means a plane and then a bus, went the joke, since there are no airports anywhere near it. The football part: Utah has been manhandling people, its backup quarterback is as good as its starter so the margin holds up in garbage time, and the coaching upgrade over the guy who left and is now coaching Michigan is plain to see.
Sean couldn’t get comfortable either way. Going against Utah right now is tough, he said, and Iowa State hanging with Iowa at +14 looked like a classic get-up spot to him. On the other hand, all three of Utah’s games have been at home, and a first conference road trip is the kind of spot where teams slip. The Utah side countered that Utah hasn’t been tested and didn’t need its good plays to beat up Arkansas. Sean’s reply was short: that was at home. Iowa State as a home dog felt intriguing to him, fading Utah felt a little cute, and he handed it to Colby.
Colby never wavered. He called Iowa State’s coach elite and one of the more underrated coaches in college football, and he pointed out that 15 players followed from Washington State, where last year’s team nearly won at Ole Miss and at Virginia, two double-digit-win teams. He admitted he took Bowling Green last week and watched Iowa State win 55-7. He conceded Iowa State hasn’t seen an offense like Utah’s, which likes to spread things out, but he thinks that creates opportunities for a defense he rates this highly.
