Colby built the whole thing around the playoff picture. He expects the committee to count Western Michigan’s Michigan game in its favor, sees Boise’s loss to Oregon as a close one, and put these two in the driver’s seat after Boise handled Memphis. He even pointed out GameDay drew its biggest crowd when it went to JMU back in its FCS days.
On the football, he noted both teams were in look-ahead spots last week and neither covered, Boise against South Dakota and Western Michigan on the trip to Rice. Western Michigan is at least as veteran as Boise, he said, and that’s enough to stay inside seven and a half.
The second Western Michigan vote came quickly. Seven and a half is a lot in what amounts to Western Michigan’s Super Bowl, and this should be a competitive game, not a Boise boat race. Laying a big number with Boise at home would be one thing, but not on the road. The Boise State backer was fine laying it on the road, and the case was short: however physical Western Michigan looks, Boise State wins the line of scrimmage.
