It opened as a wake for Colorado. Northwestern beat Coach Prime’s team 41-7, and Colby had heard enough from Colorado’s camp, especially the part about players joking in the locker room afterward in year four. Sean’s first instinct was the other direction: Indiana is 0-3 against the spread, he said, but those spreads have been north of 40, and Northwestern looked to him like a team set up for a letdown after a win that big.
Ryan’s default on a Friday night is the dog, and he’d been hoping Colby would talk him out of it. Colby did the opposite. He brought up that Indiana only beat Northwestern by 17 in Cignetti’s first year, credited Chip Kelly with getting the Wildcats’ offense humming, and pointed out Northwestern is 2-0 coming off a week-two bye. Ryan’s own angle was a lookahead: he thinks Cignetti has an eye on a trip to Jersey, where he has friends and family.
That’s when Sean broke from the pack. It’s Indiana’s Big Ten home opener on a Friday night, Northwestern is on a short week after celebrating the Colorado win, and they’re walking into the national champs. His summary of Chip Kelly was not kind. Ryan said you have to handicap the handicapper on that one, repeated that the Jersey lookahead is more real than Sean is giving it credit for, and took the points. He also floated tying the Friday night dogs together in a money line parlay.
