One Futures Bet A Day For NFL Countdown: Comeback player of the year

Kirk Cousins (+500 on DK) or Anthony Richardson (+600 on DK)

For today’s NFL futures we’re going to look at a couple of different bets for Comeback Player of the Year. The NFL has reminded the committee that this should focus on a player who has overcome an injury and returned to make an impact on the field. The top five players currently favored are Aaron Rodgers (+125), Joe Burrow (+300), Kirk Cousins (+500), Anthony Richardson (+600), and Nick Chubb (+850).

Breaking Down The Favorites

If you read yesterday’s NFL futures bet, you know I don’t have a lot of hope for Rodgers. I believe he has hit a back-end part of his career where he may be able to help a team win games by playing good, mistake-free football.

However, I don’t know if his stats will wow anybody on the field. I expect him to hit the under in most of his statistical categories. I know the media sometimes loves this guy, but I don’t think he’ll get the vote.

Joe Burrow is next at +300. Burrow, returning from injury, has two receivers that want new contracts. Higgins is practicing and said he will play under the franchise tag. Chase is currently not practicing and wants a new contract.

Will the distractions be too much? Burrow has also had trouble staying healthy consistently and will need to in order to win this award. Last year, when both receivers were healthy, Burrow still struggled to put up big numbers. I don’t like him at +300.

Kirk Cousins is +500 on his new team in Atlanta. This is where I start to like the return on value. Cousins had an achilles injury as well last year. Though slightly younger than Rodgers, he isn’t a spring chicken by any means. Cousins enters his third team after signing a mega-deal with the Atlanta Falcons.

The biggest question looming aside from health is: Are Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and running back Bijan Robinson enough to support Cousins’s continued good numbers? I kind of think they are.

A shoulder injury ended Anthony Richardson’s rookie season last year. However, he had a myriad of injuries that plagued him almost every game. He ended up only starting and finishing one game.

Still, in the times he was healthy, he looked really good. He was passing better than scouts thought he would right out of the gate. Also, his athleticism on the ground is elite. The health is the biggest question mark. However, if you think he can stay healthy at +600, this bet could definitely hit.

Who Will Win?

Last among the top favorites is Nick Chubb at +800. We haven’t heard much about Chubb’s rehab after a complete knee blowout, the same knee he had already previously blown out. It’s hard not to just assume he’s going to have lost a step.

However, with how talented he is, is losing just a step still enough to keep him towards the elite status? Much of this will depend on if he’s even healthy enough to play by Week 1. I kind of doubt he is, so I’m staying away.

After reviewing the top five, my two favorites are right in the middle: Kirk Cousins and Anthony Richardson. Yes, health is a question mark for both of them. However, I think either could really surprise people this year and put up big numbers.

If Richardson finishes a full season, his numbers just on athleticism alone should be good. If Kirk can help the Falcons win the NFC South, he’ll also be viewed as the missing piece. I like laying a little bit of money on both of these guys.
