It started with a guess that Kentucky takes a loss here and shakes up the College Football Playoff rankings again, though the 6.5 points seemed to lean toward the visitor.
Colby was on the points, and his case was about what Tennessee has to do. In his telling, Kentucky has a top 30 rushing defense and Tennessee’s run game is its strength, so the Vols will have to throw. He noted the Vols’ quarterback threw for 136 yards against South Carolina and 197 against Alabama, and said that if Kentucky stops the run, 6.5 is too many points. He also pointed to the Kentucky offense and to the Wildcats sitting in first place in the SEC.
A fair worry came up: Kentucky is 1-19 at Tennessee since 1984, per the show. Colby shrugged that off. Tennessee has owned the series, he said, but Kentucky has rarely been in first place in the SEC going into November.
Then the Tennessee pick landed. The Kentucky history made the Vols more attractive on that side, since there was no way they would look past this spot, and the early lean toward the road team on the number gave way to laying the points. The second Kentucky pick echoed Colby: the Wildcats’ defense can slow the Tennessee run game and make it a game, a 28-24 type result, and 6.5 points goes a long way.
Colby closed with a theory. Indiana and UCLA are traditional basketball schools with money that now put football first, and Kentucky, as he put it, is this year’s Indiana.
