The segment opened with one of the guys admitting this was a tough one. Whichever side he took, he figured he would feel dumb. Minnesota is coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Indiana, and Fleck as a home dog is a spot he normally loves. He also noted that Colby had been picking against UCLA for weeks. In the end he went with the Bruins anyway, because they are a fun team to root for.
Colby stayed on the Gophers. He said the number is too big, pointed to Minnesota’s top 20 defense next to UCLA’s, which he put at number seven in the country, and noted a 54-degree kick as a break for UCLA. His real question was the quarterback. A backup had come in against Oregon and won, but this is his first real test on tape and his first road trip in about a month. The counter from the guys was that Minnesota has not topped 20 points in four games. Colby called the Gophers a bottom 10 offense and said it could be a nine to six kind of run fight.
That is where the UCLA side leaned in. Five and a half points on a 39.5 total is a spot the guys usually love to take as a home dog, but they said not this year. The case for laying it also had numbers behind it. The guys noted no team has benefited more from turnovers per EPA than UCLA. They also noted that Minnesota’s defense ranks ninth in adjusted EPA per play, with UCLA first, and that UCLA knows how to scheme up a run game whoever is at quarterback. The closing joke was that Colby secretly wants a UCLA loss to make the College Football Playoff committee’s life easier.
