Our Picks
- Ryan Kramer (@KramerCentric): Iowa +2.5
- Sean Green (@SeanTGreen): Iowa +2.5
- Colby Dant (@TheColbyD): Iowa +2.5
The question on air was why Iowa is catching points at all. Colby’s answer started with the stakes. Both teams have two losses, so he called it close to a playoff game. A loser-leaves-town game, as one of the others put it.
Colby then went to the history. Iowa has won the last two in Evanston, 10-7 and 17-12, and he had Iowa with a 6-4 edge over the past 10 meetings. He also noted Northwestern is traveling back from Oregon.
The guys liked the Iowa defense in this spot. Colby said it ranks 12th in the nation and fourth against the run. He added that Iowa has not had a top-100 offense in a long time and now sits 69th, and called Iowa one of the most complete teams in the country, with Georgia as the other name that came to mind.
The guys figured special teams, and maybe a little weather, could matter in a spread this short. The guys cited Iowa’s head coach at 53-42 against the spread as a dog since 2003. The segment closed on Iowa at the two and a half, another dog spot, with all three in agreement.
