Nobody could quite decide who the letdown spot belonged to, since both sides had just won big. What settled it was Chambliss. The Ole Miss quarterback kept coming up as the guy who doesn’t give the ball away, the player one of the guys called the best in college football right now, and the reason you’d feel stupid going against him while holding three and a half points.
Past the quarterback, the case was familiarity. Watching the LSU game, the guys saw a team that knows what it wants to do on offense and defense, one that has played together long enough that the coaches know exactly which plays their quarterback likes. Florida’s defense, by their read, did not look great against Auburn.
The number did make them squint. They noted it had been bet toward Florida since it opened, said the move “stinks a little,” and wondered whether an injury was behind it. The only candidate raised on air was the Ole Miss starting running back, described as a game-time decision. It wasn’t enough to talk anyone off the points.
