Colby’s version of that Clemson finish: about seven minutes left, North Carolina deep into a long drive and a play away from a touchdown, and then the call for lightning while the fans stayed in their seats under a clear sky. Clemson came out of the break and took over. By his count all three Clemson games this year have had lightning delays, and he isn’t buying the safety explanation. His summary was blunt. These are paid players now, so sign a paper and play football.
Ryan agreed the side-by-side shots looked ridiculous and floated a golf rule for it. A golfer can finish the hole when darkness or weather hits, so why not let the team with the ball finish its drive? As for the bet, he sees the game as close to even, which makes Cal a home dog in all but name.
The handicapping part of Colby’s case was the quarterback. Clemson is starting a freshman who has never made a road start, and his first one comes after a flight across the country. “I’m all over Cal,” Colby said, and he admitted he couldn’t figure out why the number was so short. One of the guys closed it out by saying he likes Cal at home and likes fading Clemson off that performance.
