The quarterback news is what makes this number look short. The guys said UCLA’s starter is out indefinitely, with reports pointing to the rest of the season, so a backup takes over. Colby didn’t flinch. His read on Wisconsin is that the Badgers, at three and three, haven’t beaten anybody good. Sean offered Penn State as their biggest win, and Colby pointed out that Penn State has no Power Five wins of its own.
The bigger piece of Colby’s argument was the Wisconsin quarterback, an Old Dominion transfer whom UCLA head coach Chesney is about to face for a third time. Colby ran through the history: a 63-27 win last season in which that quarterback threw two picks and lost a fumble, and a 9-of-21, 189-yard game the year before with another pick and another fumble. He added that in Wisconsin’s only road game this season, at Penn State, the quarterback went 18 of 38 with two touchdowns and three interceptions, one of them returned for a touchdown. Colby wants this one as a lock and a contest play.
Sean was the closest thing to a dissent, and even he was in. He flagged it as trappy, a possible letdown with UCLA back home after the big win over Oregon and probably some Badgers fans in the Rose Bowl crowd, but said Chesney is too good a head coach to fade. Ryan didn’t need convincing: UCLA at a discount, still playing defense and running the ball, and the quarterback might not matter much at all.
